I have some Rem 6 1/2's and tried using them last week in a 222 Rem, mid range load, and the first shot pierced a primer. I shot ONLY one shot, came home and unloaded all of them.

J.D.SteeleThe 6 1/2 apparently has a much softer cup. Urban legend has it that Remington brought out the 7 1/2 after the advent of the 222/223 family of cartridges as a result of primer piercings. I've used the 6 1/2s and also the 5 1/2 ones but only in low-pressure applications.

Interesting, I almost always use CCI small benchrest primers in my 222 and 22 PPC, but I had always been under the impression that the 6 1/2 small rifle primer should function perfectly in a cartridge such as the 222.
I'm sure I have used some at one time or another over the past 20+ years and never had a problem.
Perhaps they could be used in a pinch as small pistol primers.

steve4102The 6 1/2 primers are designed for low pressure rounds like the Hornet and should not be used in a high pressure rounds like the 223.
A quote from Remington's web site.
In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds. 16 September 2009, 20:07

FasteelAny of you fellows know if these 6 1/2 primers can be used in a K-Hornet as well?

seafire2a gunsmith friend has been using them for years in his K hornet...
one of the good things in the loads I use SR4759 and Blue Dot in the 223s, they can use the 6 1/2 Rem along with any small pistol primer...
they are generating low enough pressure...

graybirdWell hell!!! I was thinking of using them in my 204, but looks like that idea has just been scratched. Steve, Thanks for raising the question!!
What do you think about using them in a 9mm for target loads?
Anyone have a 22 hornet that needs some primers?

Jimmy P Coaltraininteresting, I bought a box/1000 of these as well for my .223 remington. Anyone else need a box of primers?

Thanks for the posting.
I need to read the fine print before using primers in the future..
The positive thing about my recent testing with the 222 is, Rem 7 1/2 BR primers shoot some excellent groups in my 722/222; one .224" group and one .228" group, at 100 yards. Bullet is Speer's 52 grain HP, with 22.7 grains of TAC. These are 3 shot groups, and I used a Weaver V-16 set at 16x to do the testing.
TAC is shooting very well in 223's and 222 Mag's I have. Glad I bought an 8# keg of it. Flows thru the measure like a dream too.
