Where to get a 'gong'

I have read where several members have mentioned having a x 100 yard gong that they shoot at the range. I was wondering if anyone knew a source for one, or if they are simple enough to make, how that would be done.

Any info would be great.

We just weld a piece of chain to whatever sized plate we want to use. It can also just be a chunk of metal, say an old brake rotor.

use 1 chain if you want them to swing around, which can be pretty fun or use 2 if you want it to simply hang and not spin.

The base is usually a T shape and hang differnt size plates from the arms. Just keep them balanced or else they tip over unless you really stick them in the ground.

If you don't have a welder you can drill holes and bolt the chain. Don't use bailing wire as it does not hold up too well.

Make sure you have at least 3/4" steel, as 2506 recommends, if you are going to shoot at it with a highpower....A 270 for instance, will drill a hole through 1/2" grader blade, at 100 yds., just like it wasn't even there!! Grant.

I seem to recall somebody here suggesting an "off the shelf" solution to this so to speak???

Could it have been one of the steel "pads" used on the tracks of earthmoving equipment or similar??

Thanks for the replys guys, I am figuring out that this must be a home-made project. It is good to know it needs to be 3/4" plate steel at least. I thought it was something you might could buy, is it obvious when you hit it at 300 yards or so, audibly I mean?

Besides being 3/4", I would also recommend you ask your scrap guy for T1 or boiler plate. It's hardened & will withstand many more HV rifle hits. Yes, you can hear the inoact out well beyond 300 if it's not real windy.

The plate can be thinner if it is hardened steel.I have seen standard softpoint bullets bounce off of 1/2" hardened plate at 100 yards hardly leaving a mark.Then again most softpoints will produce large craters in 3/4" mild steel at 100 yards.

Up here in Washington we have enough saw mills going through saw blades that we can usually go in and ask them to save up a stack, if they don't already have some, and they work great. When they look like swiss cheese we pull em down and toss up a new one.
The big boys blow holes through them in a hurry but put one up at 200yrds and 22's (long rifle) can plink at it forever.

I have a friend who has a heavy duty truck shop. I've loked at section of Mack turck rails he has cut from the frames. He says they are so hard that probabbly you could not shoot thru them.

He gets them when he "shortens" a truck to fit a certain size bed.

Back to the still.

Where I got most of my gongs was metal scrap yards that had 'boiler plate' cut-outs. 1/2" steel circles that could be found in 12" to 16" in dia. You might have to travel a bit to a big city to find that kind of material.

Why do they call it common sense, when it is so uncommon??

Yes-- metaltargets.com will make you one (or more) in any shape or size you want. Theirs are cool in that they'll pivot down when struck and slowly rotate back up for the next shot using only gravity and physics. Beats the hell out of that $1500 price tag for a LaRue that does the same thing and is about the size of a Volkswagen.
