223 loads
I just got a Howa 223 HB. I haven't loaded for the 223 and was wondering what powder do you find works. I'm wanting to use the 50-55 grain bullets. Thank for any info.

I like H-335, but I just bought 8lbs of Accurate 2230C for $59 at Natchezss.com I've heard it works good.

I use 25.1 grains of WC844 and a winchester small rifle primer with IMI 55gr fmjbt. This is not the most accurate tip, but it is adequate for range plinking.

Welcome to the forum. I also have a Howa 223; it's an accurate, inexpensive, well made little shootin' iron. A good 'walking around' varminter. Not too crazy about the synthetic stock mine has, though. I'm getting a Boyd's laminated stock to try on it.

I get best results with AA2015, AA2230C, REL-12, H-322, and Benchmark w/50's and 52/53's.

AA2495, IMR/H4895, REL-15, H335, Benchmark, VV133, Nobel Sp10, and W748 w/55's.

Be sure to check o'all length; mine allows bullets to be seated out to 2.300", which is a fair amount longer than SAAMI standards. You gain a little more powder space, and a lot better accuracy with the longest possible o'all length.

The 223 is really fun to play with. It's hard to get one to NOT shoot well.

stronics,

My best powders so far have been Varget and IMR 3031. I use the 3031 with 50 gr, and the Varget with 40 gr. Haven't tried the 55 gr much yet.

Many powders work well with the .223. WC 844 (which is H-335 in canister grade) was formulated specifically for the .223 and is about the best I've tried. My gun may digest a little more than most, since my standard load is 27.5 grains with a 55 grain bullet.

You can also get good results with AA 2230, BL-C (WC 846 and WW 748), the various 4895's, and so on. Have fun!

My all time favorite powder for the .223 is accurate 2015, my favorite bullets are the sierra 50gr blitz(not blitzking) and the 50 gr nosler balistic tip.

Wow, this is just about my favorite! I use the 55 Blitz and AA XMR2015BR or W748 in rifles. I would give the 2015 the edge in accuracy. In handguns i use the 50 Blitz and the same powders.

AA 2015BR was the first powder i tried and it was the last. It was so accurate with 52grn bullets that I felt no need to try anything else.24 1/2 grns 52 Calhoon.
