45-70 3031, RL7 or keep 4198
I am shooting 300gr partitions out of 22" marlin 1895 (newer vintage). I have shot some loads with 4198. I get 1.5MOA at 100 yards with 45gr but starts getting bad flyers at 47gr.

I know, so please don't reply if you want to say, what more do you need, or whatever. But I am only kicking little under 2000fps with 45gr. Thinking I want a little more. But hate going out and trying a new powder.

If a guy wants some serious 300gr horsepower, do you guys go to RL7 or 3031 (more slow powders). Also consider the lockup, is 1 to 1.5MOA all I should expect?

i'd go with upwards of 50grs.(max) of RE7, myself. But I'm just going by Alliant's claim that RE7 is "Great in 45-70". Jay

Please get in the habit of designating which 4198, IMR or Hodgdon. They are not interchangable.

Reduce by 10% and work up carefully watching for signs of excessive pressure or velocity.

Well, Jackfish, what I am asking is, has anyone found 3031 or the slower powders working more accurately with a little more velocity in a Marlin. I know the loads but thank you kindly.

Oops didn't see your groups there. Well, I didn't ahve that good luck going past 45gr of IMR4198. I started getting clear flyers. But was using 210 primer. I can't imagine it would make that much a difference but who knows.

I have found the faster powders give better accuracy with the 300 grain bullets in my 1895. The most accurate load I ever fired in my 1895 was with the 300 grain Hornady and 50 grains of IMR4198. You could also try 50-55 grains of H4198.
