9.3x62 from .35 Whelen brass
I've recently purchased a CZ 550 Lux in 9.3x62 and I would like to handload for it. I've heard you can form 9.3x62 brass from .35 Whelen brass, which is quite a bit cheaper. What I am wondering is if this is a worthwhile project, and what exactly it involves? Also wondering if this is safe procedure?

When you can buy factory 9.3x62 brass for around $28 per 100 why go through all that bother?

What you should understand before attempting this is that in doing so you should give it a new shoulder to headspace on. That means resizing out beyond a 9.3 and then back down to 9.3 again. Do that and it becomes safe. Like Steve said, much eaysier to just buy it.

Check out grafs.com for cheap brass. Also, and others will disagree with me, I am not comfortable using Whelen or '06 brass because of the slightly different case head diameters. In particular, the whelen is a bit smaller. Despite appearances, the 9.3x62 is not based on the 30-06 case.

My Speer manual describes how to do this and lists their loads as built up on fireformed Winchester brass.

I've done about 40 R-P 30-06 cases so far without any major problems, just used a somewhat reduced load and shoot [Smile] . I even do my offhand shooting practice with the fireforming rounds.

9.3 is right, the head size is a bit different and I'm wondering how long cases will last even with reduced loads, but a friend gave me two gallon jugs of once fired .30-06 brass so if I shoot them four or five times and toss them it's not big loss.

I'm curious where you are finding 9.3x62 brass for $28 per 100. The cheapest I found was Graf & sons and they don't have it in stock yet. [Roll Eyes]
