Good hunting loads for 270.

Hello all,
I'm new to this site but I am not new to reloading. I've recently purchased a pre 64 Winchester model 70 in .270 caliber. After many years of searching amd wanting I'm proud to say that I finally bit the bullet and got one bought. I plan on keeping this rifle in its current original condition with the exception of a trigger job. My intentions for the rifle is to be used solely as a hunting rifle for whitetails here in Texas with the occasional western mule deer. My question to all out there is for any advice of a good load for this rifle. I have read that some of the model 70's shoot factory loads pretty well so if you have any experience with that I would love to hear it as well. Thanks in advance.

the 270 win. is not picky to load for. for whitetail, most of what i load is any good 130 [I USE SIERRA 130 SPBT] with 54 grs of IMR 4350 OR 56 GRS OF IMR 4831 WLR primers. RL-19 & RL- 22 are also very good powders for this round..

For 30 years I shot 130 grn Sierra Game Kings over 59 grns of H4831 and a Win Large Rifle Primer

About 4 years ago I switched to 130 grn Accubonds over 59 grns of H4831SC and WLR primers

You just described the best use of a Hornady 130 interlock a going.....excellent bullet for your needs.

I also have a pre-64 M-70 in 270. What a rifle!

It shoots 130 gr. Hornady IBs and Interlocks to the same point of impact with under 1" groups (3 shot) at 100 and under 2" @200 yds. What more can you ask of a sporter weight rifle that is 60+ years old. It also keeps the same POI from season to season.

I am still using "original 4831" so my load data won't help you, but I get 3050 fps from a 24" barrel.

For deer hunting with a 270 it's hard to go wrong with a Hornady 130 Interlock and 60.0 H4831. My 24" pre '64 M-70 shoots it into about 1" at about 3150 fps.

!50 grain A-frame, Norma brass, 58 grains H-4831 SC, CCI lg rifle primer. Max book load per Swift manual, ran a little ladder test up a bit hotter, bit lighter. This seemed to be the sweet spot for the .270 I had, an XTR Featherweight. No apparent signs of excess pressure in THAT gun... If you try it, could,nt hurt to start 10% per cent below and work your way up..Nice tight groups...

I too have a pre-64, .270 Win. & love it. It just plain works.
My "go-to" load is a 150 Partition with 57 grs. of Rldr-22. Vel. is 2930 fps and is a consistant 1 inch or slightly less performer.
I've used a .270 here in Ak. for over 40 years and it just plain works. Seems as though it works even with my eyes closed - the shots just know where they're supposed to go. Ok, maybe not quite like that but...
In the past, and for a number of years, I used H-4831 but at least for me, I never seemed to be able to get the accuracy that I got with Rldr-22. Maybe it was me, I dunno. I can't argue with anyone that gets results with any powder in this chambering.

As you can see above favorites tend to 130 grainers (just about any brand that works for you - pick one) and H-4831 or H-4831sc. Can't go wrong to start off with and that's where I'd reco you go, too.

A alternative would be perhaps a Swift Scirocco II 130 grainer w/the same powder.

I (& my rifle) love H-4831sc and 130 gr. Winchester Silvertips (although you'll have a real issue finding these bullets today) BUT when the chips are down I defer to a 150 gr. Nolser Partition and a couple grain reduction in H-4831SC.

I have used the Hornady 150gr Interbonds on Kudu this past hunting season. The bullet were running at +-2940fps and extremely accurate (less than half inch grouping at 100yards). The bullet performed very well. Maintained a 84% retaining weight on kudu shot through the shoulder bone. Meat damage was not too much.

I started using the 130 and 150 Nosler Partition loads with H-4831 in 1963. Haven't changed that formula since then. I have taken 95% of my game with them since then. Have used them on evrything in size from moose to Coue's deer. If it is under 150 lbs I use the 130 and if over the 150.

That would be a hard plan to beat.

With a Nosler Partition, you can shoot a deer form nearly any angle and get a good kill.

Strictly speaking, on my deer lease I do not need a Nosler Partition to kill most of the deer I shoot, as most of my shots are 100 yards or less, and I can usually wait for the near perfect behind the shoulder shot.

However for that once in a lifetime, or even once in a season buck, a Nosler Partition is a great choice.

And after all how many deer can you kill in a single year. For me it is four. SO the price of the bullet is not even a factor.

You can never go wrong with a Nosler Partition, IMHO.

Guess I'll be one of the oddballs here. I use the 150 gr. Nosler partition for anything I'd hunt with a .270. Winchester brass and primer. Sometimes, I use the 150 gr. Sierra Game King. It worked just fine on my antelope in 2009. Very accurate bullet BTW. I used WMR powder for that load. Too bad it was discontinued almost 10 years ago.

That was a powder that made the .270 and .300 Win. mag. sing.

I have enugh to last a while so I'm good to go.

Paul B: Your not really an odd ball at all. I use the 150 PT or the 150 gameking for elk. The 150 BT is no slouch either for long range deer. I like the results I get with IMR-4831 for all the 150,s. The only nosler bullet I have not shot is the 130ET. I guess I,m not a one gun with one load kinda guy.

I shoot 2, 270's. The Model 70 I own likes a stiff charge of IMR4350, and a 130 Ballistic Tip. The Sendero I own likes IMR4831, and a 130 Ballistic Tip. Both shoot real nice groups, but the Sendero puts 3 shots in a bug hole.

Hope this is of some use, from my now sold BRNO ZKK 600 in 270 Winchester with 23.50" barrel length:

140gn Hornady Interlock BTSP
55.4gns H4831 = 2856fps
56.0gns H4831 = 2867fps
56.5gns H4831 = 2892fps
56.8gns H4831 = 2905fps

140gn Hornady Interlock FLAT BASE
55.ogns H4831 = 2809fps

I found that standard CCU Large Rifle primers gave much less shot-to-shot velocity deviation than did Remington 9 1/2 primers.

However I also found that this H4831 also gives a muzzle flash. So I am now trying IMR-4350 as I hope that will give less flash.

Like Jerry Eden, above, I also think that for "eating" the 150 grain bullet is best in the 270 Winchester.

Shot my first deer in 1989 with a Churchill in 270 Winchester an factory Wincheter 130 grain "Silvertip" ammunition.

Took an INSTANT dislike to the 270 Winchester and, muzzle blast and carcase damage, took twenty plus years before I bought another one!

Chris,

I've got two 270 Win.

I prefer the 150 grain bullets as they tend to hold together/penetrate better at close range and they have a better BC for longer range.

Both of my 270s like the inexpensive factory 150 gr Winchester Power Points. My reload is a 150 Sierra GameKing over IMR4350.
