7mm-08 140 grain - suggested powders
Anybody out there loading 7mm-08 with 140 grain bullets. I would appreciate some help. What powder have you had success with?

I'm going to be loading hunting loads with 140/145 grain bullets from a 22" barrel on a modern bolt action. Starting with 140 Nosler BT, 140 Nsoler Partition, and 145 Speer BTSP. Looking at the Nosler book, I'm leaning towards IMR 4350.

Here is what I have on hand, but that's not a constraint.

IMR 3031, 4064, 4320, 4350, 4831, 7828
Hogdon 4895, 414, 4831, Varget
RL 15, 22
WIN 748, 760

Thanks

When I used the 7mm-08 for deer hunting, I loaded 140 grain Nosler Partitions behind the book max of IMR-4831. I got 3/4" groups which is fine for hunting. Good luck with yours....it is a superb caliber.

139's and 140's are all I use. Varget, IMR4064 and N140. Superb accuracy.

I had great luck with h 4895 in my model seven.

either the varget or the H4895 work great. As for a hunting bullet, try the 140 barnes xlc. Start off with a seating depth of .030 off instead of the .050 that barnes reccomends. real accurate out of my 7-08 ack. imp.

My most accurate rifle is a 7-08. The first loads I tried were with W760. I never changed. The first group was less than .25.

Varget-I am having great luck with it in my 7/08. I am getting .591" with 139gr. SST's and am shooting in the .7's with 140gr.Partitions. I have not used W760 yet, but like JD said, the folks I know that have tried it, have had good results also.

Good Luck!

What type of real world velcoity is attainable with safe 140 gr. loads in a 22" barrel?

<Super 88>
IMR 4895 and 140gr Barnes XLC, between .3 and .4 three shot groups at 100 yards out of my Model 7

I just got back from the range. Last night, I loaded my first batch with W-748 and the 140gr. Partitions: 42.0grs. It shoots .251" in a perfect clover leaf! I am going to try 748 with the 139gr. SST's also.

TRIGGER,
I had excellent results with Hodgdon's Varget.
Accuracy and velocities were great. Good luck. [Smile]

Try 40 to 40.5 gr 3031 and the 140 gr. Nosler BT. Very fast and very accurate in my rifle.

Tod, I don`t know about a 22" bbl but I have no problem safely breaking 2700 fps in my 20" M7 Rem with 139 Hornady SP or 140 Sierra SPs over Varget, R19, OR IMR4350. I also have a M700 with a 24" Walther bbl that runs about 50 fps faster with the same loads so I`d guess your going to be somewhere in the same range.
Don`t know if my M7 has a fast bbl or the M700 a slow one. Nor do I know what others are getting. But I do know I get a dozen loads and toss the cases because I`m tired of looking at `em , Not from wear.
You may find diferent. Others may load hotter.

My 7-08 loves RL-15. Vel. is about 2760 w/145 speer or 140 Btip. This is in a 20" bbl. so I'd go along with the others and suggest that you might get to 2800 in a 22"

I've always had good luck with as much H4350 as I can get in the case (around 47 or 48 grains, depending on case), which usually gives 2850 +/- FPS, and 1" groups in numerous 7-08's.

In my rifle, Varget pushing 140 Ballistic Tips.

(Although I'm not surprised by Bob in TX's results with 748 either).

IMR 4350 will give spectacular groups(.6 in my rifle), velocity will not be very high though. 44.0 grs. W748 with a 140 gr. NBT gave best results in my mtn. rifle yeilding 2840 fps and 1 1/8" groups.
