7x57 loads for a 1895 Mauser
Hiya,

I picked up a Mauser 1895 Chilean short rifle in 7x57 that I would like to use for a special military shoot that the shooting club I belong to has every 2 months or so.

I would like to shoot 168's or 175's (Sierra bt's), as these rifles were long throated for the heavier projectiles. Wondering if anyone has a suitable load for this older rifle (less than 45,000 PSI). I have H1000, H4350 and H4831SC powders on hand.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Michael.

I have been loading an 1895 right at 62kpsi and it kicks like a mule.

43.2 gr. H322, 154 gr. Hornady RN moly, 3.065"
primer showing more flattening than above load
vertical string, barrel very hot
2900 fps

Kiwi, all you need to do is replicate the original military load for your rifle....173 grain RN @ 2300 fps. I shoot modern pressure loads in all my 7X57s except one. It is a 1912 Chilean I cut down many years ago into a home made 'scout' rifle, complete with a 2X pistol scope on the barrel. Although mine is a 98 action and could take the higher pressures, I chose to use the original load. My personal choice is a 175 gr Hornady RN soft point over 45 grains of Accurate Arms 4350.

Around 43-45 grains of the different 4350 powders should get you the velocity and pressure you're after with a 175 gr bullet. I don't know what powders you have available over there but it shouldn't be too hard to fit this velocity range. It is what your rifle was built for and will do the job quite nicely. I know from experience that it will work on whitetails.

Yeppers, Hook has got it right. Load the 175 grain Hornaday or Norma with 44.0 grains of IMR-4350. Has worked for me for the past 32 years in Mausers 95s, 98s, Steyrs, and Winchesters.
