257 STW Loads?
I am purchasing a 7mm STW and plan on adding a switch barrel in a Pac-Nor 28" straight taper chambered in a 257 STW.

Of the standard manufactures which bullit would this group recommend for trying to achieve 4000FPS in a 100grn.

Also I know I will need a slow burning powder, which one would be this groups choice be and starting wieght?

I load for my 257 Roberts and 270 Win. using H-4831SC and 100grn and 130 grn respectively.

I have posted this on the small boar forum, but thought this might be a better place. I have done some searching on the web and thought I would get opinions from here as well.

A Barnes monolithic such as the "X" or "TSX", followed by a Nosler Partition. You need something with a hell of a thick jacket or a solid metal bullet so the core won't melt, causing the bullet to vaporize before it reaches the target!

I would be surprised if any "standard cup-and-draw" .257" 100-grain bullet would routinely withstand 4000 FPS MV!

Barnes also makes a 90 grain banded spitzer solid that you might consider if you're target shooting or pelt hunting. I've used the 75 grain in my .243 with good results.

Harold,

Ask this on www.longrangehunting.com

There are several guys on there that have 257STWs

Good Luck,

A "Lazarus" thread!

There's this right here too:

At sane pressures, you can't achieve 4000 fps with a 100gr bullet with any available powder with even a very long barrel.

If 4k is the goal, I'd be looking at 85-90gr bullets.

4k? Not a freaking chance with a 100gr bullet.

You need to be looking at RL25, Magnum, N570, Retumbo, etc. H4831 is WAY too fast.

As for Lead cores "melting" and/or vaporizing, a hearty bullshit applies here. Can't happen, no way, no how. Anyone who claims it can happen just needs to show the math to prove it. There just isn't enough energy available for it to be possible. Physics rules the day.

OH you can push a 100gr bullet 4k....you just can't do it under 70k PSI....which is not exactly a recommended loading pressure.

with a 28 inch barrel you may be able to get close to 4K with a TSX and RL22 or RL25, but don't expect to reload the case again...if you get the bolt back open. As to melting the core of a cup n core - I can get 40 grain B-Tips to 4300fps with ease from my 223wssm, and the bullet reaches the target and makes a perfect round hole. When these reach a prairie dog they make a perfect red mist! And If I keep shooting them they will make a perfect smooth bore. I just aquired a Hot Tomale myself, and from what I have seen so far 100 grains to 4K is all hype, but whats wrong with 100 grains to 3800? That's PDF.

Harold, There has been a new suprluss powder out WC857. It's supposed to be just a bit faster then WC860. It might work will with bullets in the range you are considering.

I'm using RL 22 in mine with the 100 grain ballistic tip. I'm running 3800 fps to get more loadings out of my brass. It will still kill stuff at that low a velocity.
