7x64 Brenneke
Can anyone tell me if there are any differences in case dimensions between the 7x64 Brenneke and the 7x57 other than length. I can't find a drawing of the Brenneke case to save me.

Have the drawings at the OTHER house, moving in 2 days, will check. I believe the case head is the same but the case length...7X64 is about a yard longer. Have one in Ruger 77, brass is very close to .280 Rem. May be it's even the "original"? [Confused]

Digital Dan,
I would appreciate it if you could post a drawing, when you get a chance.
Thanks,

You can run "ammoguide" at this link and they have the dimensions for the 7x64 under "tech info"

Good luck

I`m still at work , but caselength is 2,52" for the 7x64 and 2,24" for the 7x57 , fact !Case head is the same , as well as the 30-06 and 280 and 270 ......but Wilhelm Brenneke designed this fairly modern cartridge in the mid 20s already , no doubt which one was first !It`s an excellent antelope cartridge by your american standards and not too far behind the 7mm Rem. Mag., the 7x65R is the same case with a rim and it`s only 0,04" longer, hope this helps , Jrgen [Smile]

Burropacker,
Thanks a lot. I found out what I needed to know and added it to my favorites list. Cool website.

Jurgen,
Thanks for your help and Wilhelm was ahead of his time. The 7x64 with modern powders would be quite a performer, I would think.

According to Nonte, the 7X64 is about the same as the 7X57mm except for length. It is essentially a 7mm/'06....

You are joking, aren't you ?
Your line sounds like "the .30-06 with modern powders would be quite a performer".

Just skip the conditional, it's out of place.

No I was'nt joking. I was trying to gather some information for a project and paid what I thought to be a compliment to an old cartridge and it's designer. I guess you can take it any way you like.

The 7X64 was developed in 1917, not the mid 20's.

Pete: I`m sorry that I was "guessing" wrong , but like I said , I was at work and didn`t give it too much thought !1917 sounds good to me , Wilhelm truely was a genius and ahead of his time.
I load both these cartridges and the results for my father are nothing less than excellent, but it depends on the bullet/game combo if it is good or just ho-hum ! [Big Grin]

Jurgen,

The 7X64 was my first big game rifle - took a lot of impala, springbok, blesbok with it. Nearly up there with the 7mm RM, especially in the lighter weights - 120 to 140gr. I only use it for competition shooting now, I use the 375 for everything in the bush nowadays.

Pete : You said it right ......almost on par with the 7mm Rem. Mag. and all this with less powder and recoil !My father used to shoot wild boar , roe deer and chamois with it !He did basically the same thing as you ! Bought a Blaser Over/Under in 12ga. and 9,3x74 R , he shoots everything with this combo now !

I got one a couple of years ago in a CZ550. Exceptional accuracy with my only load for it, 150 nosler BT @ 2850.

I also bought 300 new remington 7x64 cases from Old Western Scrounger. That was all they had.

Ballistically it's the same as the .280 Rem, i.e. excellent, although the cases aren't interchangeable.

Finn Aagaard doted on it since it was his light rifle in Kenya for a couple decades, but when he moved to the US and finally shot out the barrel, he rebarreled in .280. A practical guy.

Bottom line, both are excellent, but you can easily choose based on which side of the Atlantic you live on.

Ammo Depot has a closeout on the ammo. Very cheap. I have a 550 fullstock in 7x64. I under stand that you can resize 30-06 brass with 7x64 dies and fire form. Never tried it. Probably going to sell the 550 as I have a 280 remington also.

Mike,Alf,
I've decided on 7x57. A little more user friendly and it certainly has enough power for my needs. Thanks for your input.
I found a set of 7x64 Brenneke dies(RCBS)If anyone is interested($15.00)Send a PM on the dies.
