Reduced 223 loads
After some disappointing results with the 22 Mag at the range yesterday, I have finally decided to try reduced loads in the 223. I have searched the site and found some information.

Still, this is my criteria for this reduced load:

Blue Dot, 2400, or Unique powder

velocity around 2200-2300 fps

I have a few Hornet bullets in .223 and .224 diameters, 40, 45, and 50 gr.

Hornady 40gr. V-Max is the bullet I most use in my full power loads.

Federal Match Primers

Desired game I wish to use it on would be Fox, Raccoon, and groundhogs out to 100 yds.

Would anyone that has experimented have some suggestions for a starting point?

unique
My favorite because of its inherent accuracy is 9.0 gr Unique and 40 gr Nosler BT. The theoretical velocity (never measure) is 2626fps.

This load is not position nor temperature sensitive.

It has proven itself against fox and groundhogs.

Thank you, Gentlemen!!! I will print these loads out and work them up.

If I can get the 40 gr. V-Max to perform well at that velocity, it will simplify my bullet purchases.

If not, well... ya gotta do what ya gotta do!!!

I'll post the results. Thanks again!!!

My .222 likes 11 grains Blue Dot and a 52 grain bullet. This is currently my range round. H110 and N110 do work as well.

My first day at the range worked out like this.

I had 3 shells loaded with 9 grs. of Unique @2550 fps 3.5" group
3 shells 7.7 grs Bue Dot @1920 fps 5.5" group

    I used Sierra 40gr. 224 Hornet bullets
    Fed. Match Primers
Groups were shot at 100 yds.

I have many more combinations to try.

I'll keep you posted as I progress.

Thank you again for the info.
