I recently added one of these multi-step expanding dies to my collection for .44 Mag/Spec. The expanding plug is screwed into the into the die's stem with a small diameter stud. In use, the plug loosens and unscrews. I won't go into what happens to the brass.

Has anyone else had this experience? I can think of a number of ways of approaching the situation, but was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and what success they've had in finding a solution.

Hmmm, My old (early/mid `70s) Lyman All American "M" dies have a lock nut on the stem. Maybe yours is missing?

IF you mean the expander plug itself unscrews from the adjuster plug, just put a drop of Loc-Tite on the screw threads.

It has happened to me. I just tightened it enough to stay put.

I've re-tightened the plug using leather-padded pliers. It it does it again, it'll get Loc-Tite.

So will a tapered expander. IMO the M die is the best thing going for expanding straight wall brass.

I've got them in 5 different revolver calibers and once adjusted I haven't had any trouble at all. IMO, they're far and away better than the expander type that comes with the die sets.

Worth trying....
