1/2 inch groups from a clean barrel, but not when
This is an unusual rifle, the Ruger 1B in .270 Win. The rifle will shoot the first cold clean shot into 1/2 inch for over a month now. Every time, rain or shin, and with a 30 degree variation in temperature. However, when the rifle fouls... after two to three rounds things begin to wonder. The forend has been glass bedded, and the majority of the channel is floated. The consistancy on that first shot is amazing... just want the others to follow in it's path. The load is with 140 Accubonds at 3040 ft/sec using IMR 7828 and Fed 210's in Winchester brass seated to fully engage the rifling (3.450 in this rifle.) Any Ideas???

Mate if only we knew, my 375H&H hates a clean barrel I get nice 1" groups after several rounds have been put through it, I would rather have my firearm shooting like yours as I hate having to take it out hunting with a dirty barrel...Les

308Sako,

Have you allowed cooling time when trying to shoot groups?

The longer it cools the better. If its below 70 degrees out, 10 min. should be more than enough. I usually only wait five min.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the input and the jollies. The rifle has been allowed to cool and I also tried cleaning it between shots. That was the most revealing. Yes I do save the targets and yes I mean that the first clean tube rounds all impact within 1/4 inch radius of the "zero." I cannot disagree that this is a good feutre, but don't like the "variable zero" which follows after a few rounds. It is not the scope Vari X3, 3.5x10, nor is it the forend. I have been able to remove the forend and replace it with no change of cold clean zero. More JB bore compound... I guess.

Just don't miss with the first shot. Since it's a single shot what could be better than that?

I took this to mean that for a period of time the rifle has shot the first shot from a clean barrel into a half inch. Many of us keep targets or records to confirm this.

This feature of a rifle is far more important than groups to me.

What the topic starter is doing however is not 100% clear.
