Whose 8mm Mauser brass runs small besides Winchester?
Have an 8x56MS. BPESteve sent me some 8x56 MS and Win 8x57 Mauser brass, but hoping to make some more from 8mm Mauser.

Winchester had smallish brass that worked without swaging the bases, but they've quit 8mm Mauser and Remington is between runs.

Between PrviPartizan and Hornady, which runs small?

Thanks,
Steve

Couple years back I bought some 7x57 Privi from Grafs. The rim didn't want to slip into my shell holder. They took it back. Have no clue as to current or 8x57 sorry.

As usual just my $.02

Steve:

I've never run into any Hornady 8x57 brass, but the bulk lot of Prvi that I have (with the Cyrillic NNY headstamp) mikes 0.468" at the head, and will not chamber in my M-S.

I have given up trying to find bulk W-W SUPER brass. I've had to resort to buying loaded ammo to tear down and make my cases from. Fortunately, the vendors at the gun shows up here are generally willing to sell at a reasonable price to get it off their tables.

A note of caution: I bought an older box of Winchester ammo with the SUPER SPEED headstamp a couple of years ago. It was not undersize at the head, and so had to be fed to my 8x57.

Cheers, Al

Im not familiar with the MS version but if a smaller head is the ticket then why not form it from 06 brass?

Wstrnhuntr,

Good idea. Might work. If Winchester's 8x57 brass was .005 undersize, maybe their 30-06 brass is .005 undersize, too.

Al and Paul, thanks for the posts on the Prvi stuff.

Had some unfired Winchester 270 at home; case heads are measuring .464 to .465, which should fit. Great suggestion.

I use a lot of PPU brass as it lasts forever..never a problem in 7x57, so I would buy the 7x57 and run it thru my 8x57 die..You could also use 6mm, 257 Robts brass..or just use 30-06 or 270...Take the issue up with PPU and it'll get fixed Im sure..

There was a variation in chamber sizes for both the 8x56 MS and the 9x56 MS. The nominal base diameter on both is .460" (or .463"?) rather than the more familiar .469" 30-06/8x57.
Two of the three 8x56 MS's I've owned have accepted reformed 8x57 brass. The third, marked "NORM" on the receiver ring, only accepted .460" base diameter cases. I happened to come across two boxes of Old Western Scrounger 8x56 MS loads. They were small base and fit the "NORM" chamber but become slightly barrel shaped in the larger chamber.
The solution, if you have a correctly chambered 8x56 MS is to buy some 7x64 brass and form and trim with 8x56 MS dies. The 7x64 has a nominal base diameter of .460" and the three or four brands I have all measure true.

For future generations: The Hornady 8x57 mauser brass I bought has a small enough base to use for the 8x56MS.
