how to tell a reloader

butchlochow to tell a reloader
you can always tell a guy who reloads, he may come out to the range in a $50,000 BMW in a $2000 suit. but he's on his hands and knees picking up .02 brass with the rest of us

Dr. MikeHell yeh! He spent many hours working and massaging that brass until its perfect for that rifle. The sicko's are those of us that then sort by chamber.

No the real sicko's are those that "clock" their brass into a specific chamber and maintain that "clocking" as they feed it into their sizing die and for all subsequent firings.

I'm a lefty with a left bolt, right port action.

DECI'll have you know I don't get on my hands and knees, I crouch

My knees can't take it any more and I can get around a lot faster waddling! I make no bones about what I'm doing either. If someone walks away and leaves brass, it's MINE!

Ol` JoeFetching brass is what a wife and kids are for. A good one can find a sooty 45acp case in 3 inches of fall leaves. A real good one catches them coming out of the chamber.

At the same time you can tell, by the brass you find, who has "stupid" money... I bought the 338-378 Weatherby with reloading in mind... I can't tell you how many pieces of brass I have found at the range

... Heck, factory brass is $2.25 each much less a box of factory ammo for $100... I'm glad there are people out there with more money then brains

skb2706I prefer the term 'handloader' but I peruse the local rifle range looking to see who is shooting a rifle, new box ammo and definitely not saving it. At just the right moment I will spring the question on them. "hey you keeping that"....
Works great just before big game hunting season and once I get that stuff then I resort to picking thru the bucket for the obvious 'matched box sets'. Brass of interest would include but not be limited to - .300 WinMag, .300 H&H, .243, 22-250, 30-30, .204 Ruger and 7-08.
I have brass that is sterile, match marked and neatly packaged. Not so with my underwear.........

Sure we still buy store made ammo.....just once a year just before and just after deer season when it is on sale....but not for hunting like all the rest....fireforming

375fanWith the price of brass going up,especially on the big bores, you can bet I'm on my hands and knees to find it. Got to admit I've always done that. I too am guilty of scouring range looking for brass, and have always been amazed that shooters will leave so much good brass behind. Yep,love to look in stores for cheap factory stuff or just how much cheaper my reloads are. Point this out to wife to justify all the new components that are always arriving at house.

hawkinsA real reloader buys a rifle to fit the brass
he picked up.
God Luck!

WinkYou know they've gone off the deep end when they buy an ultrasonic brass cleaner, just so that it will be shiny before they apply the Brasso.

1. Shows up at the range in a $700 car loaded with $10000 worth of rifles.
2. Buys the rifle last after finding a great deal on dies and brass.

BuglemintodayI have to say that I am guilty of most of these things
Was at the range this morning picking up brass, and shooting factory ammo to have more brass to resize

I have so much 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag brass that I am contemplating purchasing one just to reload for as well

prof242My best hunting buddy found a great deal on 6-284 loaded ammo, brass, and dies. He bought the whole group of stuff and then had a rifle rechambered to shoot all of it.

Now you are making me worry about myself, I have at least half a dozen or so guns that I bought just BECAUSE I had picked up so much "free" brass at the range, I had to have guns to fit it all

A couple of months ago I was carrying a couple of rifles from my car to a bench, and the guy at the next bench looked over at me and sait "I'll bet those rifles are worth more than your car." Later that week our local Subaru dealer gave me $100 in trade for my '85 Subaru on a new '08 Subaru Outback.
And yes, I've been reloading for over 40 years.

It would have been easy to spend 100K on cars the last 20 years and have ZERO to show for it.
However 100K spent on good rifles in the same time frame would be worth about 200K now. Have to stay focused on the fight priority.
Went skeet shooting once. A guy there had a fairly new Ford Bronco back when they were the big 4X4 vehicle. Back then it was worth about 10K to 12K.
He had two Perrazis in the back of it. Each was worth about 4K to 6k. What is Bronco worth now?
And the Perrazis?

trekker111I won't think twice about digging through the trash at the range.
I'll also find an opening for a little small talk to find out if they reload, and if not I'll start picking up the brass before they even leave, even if I don't use that type.

DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

GerryYou're between Marginally & Extremely afflicted when you select your shooting venues based upon the potential Booty in the Brass Bins.....
When Handloading becomes a malady similar to owning an iPod - you spend more time administering your Music than listening to it.....
You feel compelled to go to a private range where you have to pay by the hour and then spend the first 45 minutes picking through the Brass Bins.....
The Range has a Target Trolley System but instead of walking back & forth you get your exercise by crawling underneath the benches to look for brass.....
You actually paused in the aisle containing the Roller Blade Safety Equipment and looked at the price tag on the Knee Pads.....
Your load is always heavier when departing the range as when having arrived even though the expended bullets from the ammunition shot should have been the heaviest part - go figure.....
Your dexterity improves to the point where you can type 120 wpm due to brass "sorting"......
You become a Snob Handloader; only pick the cherry once fired stuff, Lapua, Norma, RWS, Federal (.308 Win. Match) Geco but the Remington, Winchester, Hornady, S&B, Yugo and Russian headstamped stuff only receives a passing glance.....
You even collect such oddities like 5.6x52 (22 Savage High Power) brass and cosider whether purchasing the Dies to go with them would possibly justify a rifle also - which scope? The oddball .228" bullets don't seem to matter at all.....?
You have picked up 5 pieces of 416 Rigby brass and comtemplate having a custom rifle built for it and then purchased an MTM ammo wallet just in case.....
Green fingers become an occupational hazzard when going to the range to "Shoot".....
You have a Wholesaler's account at MTM, Plano & Berry's and list them under Management & Organization in your Rolodex.....
Your inital Collapasble Plastic Stroage Box for your Range Equipment now total 3 and you consider taking an extra one - Life's Uncertain.....?
You offer to go shopping for your Wife because your stock pile of 1 gallon Ziplok Plastic Baggies is getting depleted.....
Someone asks you if you've got Reloading Equipment For Sale and you immediately respond, "NO!" although the spare Reloading Press is still in the garage in it's Shipping Carton.....
Your current favorite cartridge is based upon what's the Flavor-of-the-Month in the Brass Bins at the Range.....

Cheers,
Number 10
