I have a bit of experience with spearguns both above and below water. They will not ricochet if they have the string attached! Question is, can you hang on to it if your aim is adequate? BTW, don't practice on trees, you may never get the damn thing out. They do penetrate a bit, SD very high. Generally I'd suggest that inside of 30' or so you should be able to connect but I'm unfamiliar with your brand. I happen to have a Scorpion O/U that uses nailgun cartridges to fire the spear. W?O the retaining line it will dent the far end of an Olympic size pool, out of water...well you might not find the spear if it's pointed up a bit.

I think that hanging your cat out by a string is a good idea, and yes it would be baiting. But even if it doesn't bring in a 'yote it's still a good day.
