Hunting Near Madison, Wisconsin
Hey all, Just checking to see what anyone has heard in about small game hunting around madison wisconsin. I am moving there and could use a few squirrels and other furry little creatures to shoot. Let me know if anyone knows of public land down there. Thanks much

PB, welcome aboard! There are rumors afoot that the public landfill is rife with cats, a.k.a., the other white meat. Big Grin

They are soft and furry, go well with garlic and ginger. Any weapon is legal(mebbe), and best of all, there is no closed season.

You may think you just dialed into the twilight zone, not true. Have patience and keep an open mind! sofa

Packerbacker,

I live in Northern Wisconsin but had relatives in the Madtown area for many years. Take a "road trip" north or west of town as there is still some woods in that area that are not owned by liberals. Knock on some doors and you will be able to find some squirrel woods. If you can feign a little Norwegian accent, or are chewing on some Lefse while you are talking to them all the better.

Be advised, crat hunting in Wisconsins Liberal OZ is certainly a covert activity and should be attempted only by those reaching a certain "readiness" if you will. The experts located here are (so to speak) the Randy Mosses of the sport. No, No I didn't mean that, wrong choice again. OK, OK the Brett Favres of their sport and will advise you on everything you could hope to know. (Whewww.....gees I hope they don't see that Randy Moss thing, I am dead)

His family lives just across the river from me and they stay mum on the subject.

Packerbacker, take Hwy 12-18 west and start knocking on doors around the Blue mounds and Barneveld areas. Tons of walnuts and oaks in that area. There are several DNR public hunting areas surrounding Barneveld and Ridgeway(the next town west) and plenty of kind landowners in between. You must promise to stay away from Dodgeville though, that is my homeground!!!! Smiler Smiler Smiler

Thanks so much for the help guys, it will make my coming home that much, better. From the home of Leinenkugels beer originally and recently spent time in Georgia and hated it. So here I come back home. Nothing better I tell you, never move!!

I don't follow much as far as the world of Sports go.If I get invited over to see a game, who ever is the fav of the inviter, they lose.
I watch(sometimes),the lil short 'play o the day clips on the local and national news.
Like the talking heads said,Moss still has a little growing up to do.
I can bash local boys all I want. Wink

Packerbacker,

I love Lienie's Red, but wouldn't a New Glarus Brewery "Fat Squirrel" beer be more appropriate?

Lafarge, WI has a lot of hunting opportunities. Lots of people at times, but as the weather cools off so does the pressure. Also, check your local DNR office and they'll have a list of public hunting lands. Other than that, knock on doors, people do it around here though most get denied.

.been thinking (a novel event) ....used to hunt near Crystal River, Mich., in the UP just above (sortof) Madison. Wisconsin has only a 1-week deer season (as I recall), while Michigan has a 2-week season. There were deer all around me....just outside of Crystal River....of a dirt road called (as I recall) Pilot Knob Rd. I also remember alot of land clearing going on at that time/that location, and I don't know what the current reality is. But, Crystal River was loaded with deer, and surrounded with really beautiful wooded hills.

Hey!
I live in Madison. So for hunting areas:
A.Just north of the Airport Cherokee Marsh
B. Lodi Marsh up on the ridge(take the Iceage trail)
C. Just south of Bristol Sportsmans club
D. Right around the deerfield gun club

This should get you started, there is a lot more but I havn't had the time to get to them yet. Just check the DNR websight they have printable maps.
(any park if you have a can shhh)

I was in Rio (near Madison)a little while ago and all I saw was flat with dairy cows. I did see quite a few geese flying so that might be an option.
