N. S. SherlockShotgun question
What is the correct lead on a crossing tom at 18 mph. 37 yards away. That viagra laced tuna treat I put out in the other post is working big time. Oh yes, 6x4 buffered XX turkey loads.

DigitalDanNS, I wouldn't mess with those cross-dressing 'spensive turkey loads myself. #4 will work fine if you want to stop them, #8 if you want to see a new land speed record(4 paw drive-open division).

claybusterIn a AA hull,,I think a 1oz. load of #6 over 19 grain of red dot using a AAwhite wad should get you close to 1200 fps,I like the light and zippy stuff,,Check me on that though,,Don't take it for gospel,,,,,,But things inside of 25 yds. just seem to explode into nothing when hit. I hit a chuckar a bit early one time and the young guide all but swallowed his chew when the bird literally exploded before his eyes. The gsp brought back more or less a skin with a few feathers on it. As far as lead,,,I have a hard time explaining,,bring it up from behind get a little ahead,,and take it OUT,,,Clay

claybusterI forgot to mention,,,thats the 12ga. 2 3/4"hull.It would probably work in the remington green metallic sts hull as well. But like I said,,,do a cross reference on me,,,Clay

What is the correct lead
I actually built up a spreadsheet one slow workday for this exact question...I was referencing dove hunting and wanted to prove a point to a co-worker that you HAVE to lead when wingshooting...

Anyway, there are 2 4x6 duplex Remmy loads...a 3" at 1210 fps, and a 2.75" at 1260.
Assuming a perfect 90 degree crossing at your stated 18 mph, 37 yards (111 feet), and neglecting the slowing of the shot during flight, you need a lead of:
3" shells, 2.42 feet.
2.75" shells, 2.51 feet.
The spread of the pattern should take care of the rest of the lead required to compensate for the slowing of the shot. Yeah, I have too much free time on my hands...Good shooting!
