The best bait, not for mice, but for CRATS!
I think my backyard songbird feeding station is a good bet for first place although I have used other savory sauces and treats to lure puddy crats within range.

They have a certain taste for fish scraps and shrimp I've found. Doesn't help 'em swim any better but they don't seem to mind.
