Doncha ever...
...shoot a 'dillo from 15' with a dead soft PP .44 Mag. Eeker Unless you REALLY want to make a point! clap

It was facing me, face down in the leaves...went in right over the noggin...whole ass-end of the thing did a Sam Peckinpah... beer I mean, chunks and stuff all over the place! rotflmo Tail took off and flew about 10', shell split about three different places up around the shoulders. Gawd, I hope I don't ever get shot by one of those things...puts a whole new meaning on "terminal ballistics". lol

@#$%^& possums-on-the-half-shell! Dan, you're a better man that I am...I sat under a tree and watched one of the dang things on my last evening in the field this deer season. I didn't want to ruin my deer hunting as I had room for one more in the freezer, so I watched the dang thing for almost 2 hours, all the while itching to see what a 165 grain Nosler Partition at 3000fps will do to one at 20 paces! In the end I shoulda had my fun...no deer and the 'dillo was gone by sunset when I gave up on big game.

Got any pics?

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

Yes and no. Our lizards vanish into the bogs when it chills down, cool today, heading for the high 20's this weekend. .458 Lott? clap How much hang time? Confused

Clay, doncha wish they made Ballistic Tips for the carbine? rotflmo

That little .44 is surprising me more and more...one of the biggies is that it isn't that loud. Kinda a flat bark and I suppose a fat 'Whop'...things have been too close to hear that part. Frowner

Goin' to the range tomorrow for some load work on Ravage...mebbe will take Special too. Some of those AK fanatics down there need to learn some respect... Smiler

You boys always get me to thinkin'.

Dillos, have been reported north of the Missouri river not far from here. The're not supposed to get this far north but with the mild winters the progression continues.

I've had thoughts of a 168 gr BTHP at 3100 from a 300 WSM BUT as I think I will be getting a 45/70 in the next week or so I might take a different path.

Making crats and other varmints into lots of little pieces is fun. I hope I never grow out of it.

However Dan, I am still in the fast and furious camp. Nothin' says hello like 4000 fps.

Since I was a little runt I've heard 'speed kills'. Must be true since I've heard it so many times. cheers Now speed is a relative thing ya know. You can accelerate a crat to as little as 3000 fps with a well placed charge of C4 and the little(r) bastid is still toast. Smiler I wonder if it's just the acceleration that does all that stuff? Confused One part accelerating one way, another one sayin' "fuggit, I'm outa here!" an goin' off on a tangent, some of it gettin' on your boots. EekerDisgustin' things, truly. thumbdown

Once I shot a crat with 1/4 Bore Bob and an 85 gr BT...out about 400 yards in a peanut field. I never bothered to memorize how fast the bullet was goin' out there, didn't look very spectacular....Bang/flop/out of sight in the peanut tops. Left the muzzle at about 3400 fps, maybe a bit less, would have to check the load book on that...sure was a lot of crat mess on the other side even though the crat didn't look all that bad. Well, kinda thin behind the shoulders...fashionably svelte if you know what I mean. Confused

Some years ago I had the opportunity to be the "spotter" for a friend that didn't need one.
We were hiden in a small copse about 100 yds from a glade that gently rose from a small meadow.
This otherwise small game heaven had a ferral crat problem.
The position of our hide and the dirrection of travel of the crat gave my talented friend and ideal "texas heart shot".
The 180 gr FMJ made a perfect path from the southern orifice of the north bound cat through what would have been his nose.
II'm not really sure why the head stayed connected because what I saw, through the binoculars, was the cat expand to about the size of a basketball before collapsing.
Interesting as that was, I believe a hollow point is the correct pill above 3K fps.

Velocity is only part of the recipe. Bullet construction is the other. If you get enough velocity, even FMJ's make a mess. As I mentioned before, I use a 110 gr HP "TNT" from Speer in my 7mm wsm. I think this will be a good marriage of velocity and bullet construction to wreak havoc on whatever it hits. Still testing it out though. Not enough test specimens around here.

Your .44 with a dead soft lead bullet is apparently very effective also. Well, you know what they say: "there is more than one way to skin a cat"
