Re: Harehunting with dog
Nice looking hound. Those hares look a little larger than our snowshoe hare. Definitely bigger than our cottontail rabbit. How long does the dog usually trail the hare before it circles to the gun? Do you ever allow the dog to trail for extended time? Our cottontails will usually circle in less than a football field size area, but the snowshoes will run large and take the Beagle hounds out of hearing many times before affording a shot.

Most of our dogs trail the hare in a low speed, so then they can go like this
for many hours, and it will not bother the hare a worth mentioning.
Our hare will go in circles, but how big circles and how many
circles he takes before he move to a new place, and new circles, depend on many things.
Age.... young hare take small circles, and older goes in bigger circles.
We hunt in the mountains where its no tree, but when our hare get white
and it isn't snow, he went down to the forrest and goes in circles there.
We have a saying here in Norway : "You never know where the hare is jumping",
and as a harehunter I can agree on that saying.
