We Let One Go....
Some old friends and I got together Saturday for some shooting at an old landfill.
Said place was shut down by the Feds years back and was glossed over to make it look pretty.Of course the country folk out there would still bring stuff(old appliances, tires some garbage)and dump em illegally.
It was drizzlin' rain but luck would have it,there was a shack of sorts with a large overhanging roof.A fellow shooter said it used to be the 'weigh house'where they would weigh your truck and charge ya to dump there.Place was shot all to pieces of course but the roof didn't leak and there was a rail/table of sorts that ran along on side of the overhang.
Most of us just brought .22 rifles and handguns. One shooter brought a .222 remmy.Reminded me of one of our fellow small gamers here.I fell in love with that lil' cartridge.Thats gonna be a different story.
We were shooting at stuff, very informal. As it got darker, the real targets came out. Rats.WooHoo. Razzer
They got thick as starlings.Too my left a crat appeared. It wasn't very big,and it had a bum right rear leg.Black and orange and soaked.
You would think all the shootin' would have made that crat look for other territories.
Not this one, it gimps right out to the edge of the shooting area and sits down. One shooter to my left swung his .17 to shoot Mr. Crip Crat, but instead shot a medium size rat about 4 feet in front of the Crat.
The rat was flippin' around like a fish and the gimp kitty was all over it.The crat carried the rat off to its brush pile.
We let one go.

One instance where I will say good job. Rats are a far bigger problem than crats.

Sometimes life is like a Mayfly nymph on still water with a 2# tippet. Sometimes it's a Penn International 80 with the drag smokin'.

We Americans were tired of being thought of as dumb, by the rest of the world. So we went to the polls in November 2008 and removed all doubt.....let's not do it again in 2012 please.

Hey Poletax,
Just keep feeding the four footed furry felines and you will be rewarded with a target rich enviroment. Sounds like a job for a night vision equiped, silenced rig to take care of all the(c)rats!

Let one go? Well I did the same thing at the ranch 3 weeks ago when a sow with a broken front leg "escaped"--actually I was waiting until last light to be sure "the buck" didn't show up and somehow she got away. But--I'm going to the ranch Wednesday and I have orders from friends for two pigs. thumb

Oops, momentary premature senility--this is the small game forum. Sorry.

It is always better to shoot the smaller target first.
