DigitalDanDon't know much about the Idaho panhandle, but down south a ways, about half way between Idaho Falls and Lead Ore, there's more ground squirrels than ammo, and that's a fact. Don't recall seeing many jacks but it is spectacular scenery, very empty of the influence of mankind. Check the map for a government nuclear facility, head a bit north. Take lots of .22 ammo, and iron sights. The sage is a little bit taller than the squirrels.

lawndartI live 45 minutes west of Boise. Ten minutes north of my house is 50,000 acres of BLM land just crawling with ground squirrels. We call it "The Killing Fields". Just take I-84 West out of Boise to the Sand Hollow exit (exit # 17), and turn either left or right. You will be in and amongst them. As DD mentioned, you can't bring enough ammunition. The shooting is good to great from the last week of March until the second week of June.
Kids ride their dirt bikes around on a few ridges in the area so there is always the possibility of bonus points. A few years ago one little prick thought it was funny to gun his bike and drive in front of some shooters just as they were bearing down on rodents. Damned if a stray ricochet didn't punch a hole in the left rear tire of his pickup truck. I hear those Wild Country radials are pretty expensive.
