Wheel weights

Might have been discussed before, but what is the lack of wheel weights going to do to the bullet casting industry, both individuals and companies? I have some accumulated, but the local tire place told me Dec 31st is the gooberment deadline for getting rid of lead weights. I know there are companies that sell bullet alloys, but it's very inconvenient and I don't want to think about the freight to order the stuff. Opinions? Goatwhiskers

The bullet casting idustry does not rely on wheel weights for their raw materials.

Not bad at all! Guess I was thinking more about the average joe that has been relying on WW for a source. Maybe I should get some material in stock for local casters of bullets, fishing sinkers, etc. Goatwhiskers

Indeed.

Even though they are getting expensive and I am am old guy, I am laying is a stock of wheel weight ingots for the future.

Once upon a time I used wheel weights for casting bullets...

Then my dad brought home some type metal.
As in actual type, you clould read the sentences on the metal strips.

After I cast bullets with that, I was "ruined".

So I found a couple of places in the city where I could buy Linotype in bars weighing @22 lbs or so.

Easy to cast with and makes great bullets.

Linotype is fine for paper punching but way too hard and brittle for hunting. Paper patched pure lead with 2% tin added is perfect to around 2200/2250fps. Wheel weights work great up to around 2600fps. Half and half, wheel weight and linotype will give you around 18.0/18.5 BHN and is about perfect for 2600fps and up for hunting.

HMMM,well; as I see it the general consesus of the liberal left is ALWAYS to "protect the children". I personally have never given my children a wheel weight as a teething toy. What a crock. I will not spent my time this evening discussing historical reenactments; I therefore entrust those who are unfamiliar with the Boer War of 96-99 to look at histories little piece of folly's for those who don't pay attention.

Illinois just banned lead wheel weights as well, what a crock if you read the actual study that was used as reasoning for the law.

I have never had linotype bullets be "too hard".
on deer and oigs they always go all the way through exceot for one big pig I shot from behind. The 240gr 44 Mag SWC hit about mid spine and ended up in the right jaw.

It was only marred by the rifling and the on the nose by the teeth of the hog...

I can still get about all I want here, but the cost has gone up to 50-cents per pound, and about 15-18%(by weight) is clips, zinc, steel, and the odd aluminum WW these days.

I spent a few hours the last couple afternoons, and turned 675lbs of WW into 588lbs of nice 2.75lb ingots. I have nearly 2300lbs of them.

I got another 30 caliber NOE mould, 170gr, and am starting to work up loads for my DPMS 308.
