45/70 - 500gr RCBS FNGC
Guys,
Also posted this in the Reloading forum.
Has anyone worked with the RCBS 500gr FNGC in a Marlin 45/70? I'm not sure there is anything to be gained compared to a 420gr but I'd like to develop some loads. Noticed Garrett claims over 1500fps from a 500gr+ cast projectile, so I presume 1450 - 1500fps with a 500gr cast is achievable. Any load sources?
Thanks...

Geo.
The only problem with long bullets is the limitation on overall loaded length for the ammo in a Marlin. At one time, I heard that either the overall length would be too long with a long bullet seated normally, or-- that one might have to seat a bullet too deeply for normal pressures.

The Marlin functions well with bullets in the 350 grain flat nosed class. That's good for most stuff.

Geo,
Agreed that the 500gr is hardly required but still I'd like to see what can be achieved. The Lee manual has 500gr cast loads for the Marlin that reach into the high 1400's but those powders aren't available to me.
Cheers...
