45 Caliber wildcat for cast boolits!!!!

45 Caliber wildcat for cast boolits!!!!
Has anyone any expierence with a blown out 06 case, where it's opened up to 45 caliber? I saw this on another AR forum, but can't find it now. This sounds like a great idea to me, I have a couple of 98 actions that this would take care of.

Mike I think maybe 40 caliber for the 06 case?

The 06 case measures .470 at the web end and a 45 cal goes .458

I just wish to do it without buying a 458 winnie. I have located one that the owner is scared to shoot, might be able to buy it cheeep!

Will the standard 458 winnie twist rate shoot cast boolits decently? This may be my best option.

No 458W experience here Mike, but I think the twists are ok. I've seen the long throating posted per this caliber a concern-- but how they shooten cast I dunno.

I'd suggest the 45/70 in a gun capable of handling level three loadings all the everyday recoil 99%+ of us shooten cast want to deal with... then some.

Maybe that was the 284 win blown out for 45? When OF was exploring his Harump rond idea and we were on the topic of the 45acp Mauser conversions, I picked up some 284 brass and cut it down to stuff a 458 bullet in it. I think that it looked pretty good, the question would be if it would reliably headspace off of the mouth. I fed alright out of half my Mausers. I haven't done anything past that. I did order the 45acp conversion, but it hasn't shown up yet. There was a thread about a 458 win short mag on the bigbore forum.

The old .45 automag used 30-06 cases, the .45 acp is bases on the 30-06 case and you can make .45 acp from 30-06 or mauser cases. The 284 with the rebated rim should work with the mauser bolt face, but the chamber would need work for the larger body. Just my thoughts, I ordered one of the .45 conversions and I'm still waiting too.

I am aware the 44 AutoMag is an 06/08 web, but the 45?

The 45 ACP has a .480 headsize vs the .473 of the 06/08. Max opening at the mouth of the 45 ACP is also .473 which exceeds the web dia of the 06/08 which is normally .470 max otta standard cases. No doubt some scrournger is making 45's otta 06/08 brass, but it looks like a career move.

All those are just SAAMI specs out of the book. Try miking some of the brass and see where it really is. The 7.7 Jap has a .470 rim and the 7.65 Argentine has a .474 rim but 06 brass can be used in them and they also fit 06 bolt faces. We're only talking a mere few thousands here and there are min and max measurement not only on the brass but on the guns, like the bolt faces. Besides oldfeller is making this undertaking himself so doesn't matter what an 06 chamber is because he's going to make the chamber what he wants it to be. The only think I have about making 45 auto brass out of 06/08 brass is you have to thin the necks out and 45 acp brass is plenty availiable. There are some instances where special 45 brass necesstates being made from 06/08 brass and that's went someone has the wildcat 38/45 and they are hot rodding it in a 1911 unsupported chamber. Regular 45 acp brass in that wildcat in the 1911 unsupported chamber that is hot rodded will blow the web out.

Unless you're looking for elephant gun power (and it doesn't sound like you are), you might consider the .450 Marlin or it's older identical wildcat cousin, the 458x2" American, both based on the standard magnum case head, the .450 just having a taller belt to avoid chambering in 7mm/.338 chambers. Oughta shoot cast real sweet. Either could be chambered in a short action bolt gun

Just get the 458 win mag. The beauty of big bores is they can be down loaded to work as milder rounds, or be fun full patch if you desire. Small guns will always be small guns.

I just had a second 458 Lott built. The majority of my loads will be either ~300 gr cast pistol bullets @ 1200 fps, or ~400 gr @ 1800 fps. I can always drive the 350 gr jacketed @ 2400 fps, which is still much milder than the 500 gr @ 2300 fps loads.
