Can I use wax toilet rings as bullet lube?

I never tried it, but what the hell, they're cheap. I did read somewhere that someone had tried it and it worked. You might have to use a heater on your luber, or melt it down and soften it up some, but I don't see why it would not work.

Probably not. Esp, as most are not pure beeswax - or so I have heard recently.

If you do, cut it with 40-50% Olive oil.

Would these function as well as 'soft gas checks' that I've reabout about from Ross Seyfried? Seems a wax plug may take that function, but would like to know more about the soft check. bob

I'd recomend mixing in some moly/lythium axle grease. Velocity isn't the absolute determining factor on whether the lube is stressed or not, pressure is much more important factor. 1500 fps in a handgun is tough on a lube, but generally pretty mild in a rifle, excepting smoke poles.

If you want some good lube at a reasonable cost, you can get a 10 pack of LBT's lube shipped for $35, much better stuff then alox. I think alox is greatly over-rated as a lube, and have found other lubes that work much better, espially ones that are more accurate.

Hmm what caliber gun are you using that a wax toilet ring would serve as the lube for?
Just joking I had a mental picture of a projectile with the wax toilet ring on the base.

I was thinking of using it as a lube on cast bullets fired from rifles using xmp5744 powder, which gives pretty low pressure.

The test I did was over a year ago, so I'm a little sketchy on the details, as I recall the bullet was an LBT LFN 390 gr .475" shot in my 480 @ 1200 fps over 21 gr H-110. I tried alox stick, RCBS green pistol, Appache blue, and my home made beeswax/moly-lythium lube. At 25 yds, the appache blue and home made lube grouped 1", the RCBS grouped 2", and the alox was 3-4".

I plan to re-test lubes using both a Lee 400 gr pb, and a mountain molds 400 gr gas check in the 480 using liquid alox, LBT blue, appache blue, a commercial white, commercial blue, and my home made lube, but I just haven' had the time to do it. I'm curious to see if the Lee bullet with small lube grooves is more sensitive, or at least behaves differently then the gc bullet with deeper lube grooves. I want to shoot two 5 shot groups with each bullet/lube, which means 120 shots.

Hello 500, I tried a modified FWFL with ATF and bowl wax. I had to use a bunch of candle wax to get it to setup. I have some left I could send you if you want to try it. I think I still have your address on the 510-650 Saeco mold box. I tried to do some of the FWFL also, but I'm not sure it turned out right. I did an accuracy comparison on different lubes in my 454. It was in the middle of winter and I got a large varience in group size, but it could have been the cold as my trigger finger was really starting to hurt on the last groups. When I get a break from life, I'll do the test again this summer and update it.
The bowl wax by itself is too thin, it melts all over the place when you handle it.
The rings sure are cheap though. They are about $.86 at Home Depot

I still owe you for those sample 650's you casted for me. Just 2 days ago I loaded another sequence to try to get them to regulate. The best cast bullets in my 500 NE so far have been the 500 grainers you did for me at the beginning. Thanks.

500, just saw this post,I have been useing the rings for a long time now, all I do is mix it with candle wax 50/50 by weight, I scrounge old candles from every where and some times come up with the ones made with bees wax but doesn't seem to make a diff.
I came across some alum tubes just the right size for my star luber sizer, and just stand them up and put a small dowell in them and pour the mixed into and let set over night,then push it out from the bottom,OH1 forgot they are hollow and I set them on a plate,
I have used this lube for my 45-120, and for patch lube for my 8 bore.

Dave, thank you. It is good to hear that this is a reasonable alternative and that it works. In warm weather the toilet rings are a bit goopy, but the candle wax must solve that problem.
