Gas-checked cast bullet seating
I received a box of 335LFN Beartooth bullets in .418 dia for my .416Rem. They're supposed to be 0.795 long, with .420-inch crimp-to-nose length (so, that leaves 0.375 to seat entirely inside the neck). Unfortunately, the bullet I received are 1-inch long so that they have to be seated 0.580 into the neck of the .416 Rem (which is not that long) if they have to be crimped to the proper groove. That exposes the gas-check and the first lube band to the burning powder.

Is it OK to seat gas-checked cast bullet this way? I would think, you'd want the gas-check and the lube to be inside the neck walls, not hanging within the powder area.

To alleviate the problem, I seated the bullets so that the case neck crimps onto the 2nd band, exposing the first lube groove to the outside, but still maintain a full 0.010-in clearance to the lands.

Any comment from our cast-bullet experts is greatly appreciated.
