Hello, Aladin.

I'm kbmoly, a newbie on the forum, but have some experience with cast bullets - I'm told you have had some interesting results using cream of wheat fillers in long range cast bullet loads, and would be very interested in the story.

kbmoly I have no experience with COW. It will absorb water and has resulted in some problems when allowed to sit for long periods under humid conditions.

I developed Bf filler which is just ground bran fiber-- which will not absorb significant amounts of water. This fiber ground finer in a coffee grinder at home or in the store. There's various long threads discussing it's use in the Shooters Archives.

I'm not Aladin and I don't play him on TV--but I'll give you a story and Aladin will never know---He has me on ignore. I got stranded on an island and was cold,hungry and naked. Had plenty of ammo--but there was nothing to shoot. Had used various fillers in the ammo. So I pulled some ammo apart and had a bowl of cream of wheat as a matter of fact for breakfast. Later that day pulled some more apart and used the flour to make biscuits. That night I pulled some more apart and used the dacron to make myself a suit and even a tie. Would have gone to town,but there was no town. Had no place to go. Morale of the story is dacron has no use if you get stranded on an island.

C'man -- So where does the kitty-litter fit in?

You mentioned long range - does this also mean high velocity? How do you control moisture - or has it been a problem? Long range - how far?

Maybe some will make a boat tail mold and a boat tail gas check. Thuink about it, if you build your own casting machine, boat tail gaschecks should be possible. All the people on here should be able to come up with some ideas.

These threads are really starting to get like to old shooters board with the tangents they go flying off on. <G>

Some of the BPCR shooters are using grooveless bullets now. And reporting good things at a 1000 yrds to boot.

Yep, just good old automotive grease in a can. Dale, I've shot lots of 1850 FPS plain base .45-70s with this stuff. I'm just getting into casting for .30-06, and my initial loads used Lee 130 grain round nose and 113 gr. "soup cans" of air cooled wheelweight that I shot unsized without gas checks. I had an open container of Scot Nitro 100 handy, so I loaded them with a convenient .45 ACP case full (9 grains) expecting a mild plinking load circa 1500 FPS. Well, those things made a pretty sharp crack and the velocities averaged about 1825 FPS with the 130 grains and about 1875 FPS with the 113s. I was making no effort to orient the powder, and the velocities were very consistent. Can't comment about the accuracy because I was running out of ammo by the time I got them shooting on the paper. The POI was way off from the full power jacketed loads I'd been shooting. (Low.) The grease worked OK, though; the bore ended up a light gray, about like a .22 RF that's been shot a while. After the first 10 rounds the gray was only on the lands, it took about 30 to get it uniform. I'll gas check 'em and maybe harden 'em before pushing the velocity up much more.

Several years ago on the Shooters Talk BP cartridge board, there was some discussion of seating a vitamin E capsule between the card wad and the bullet base. I don't recall the outcome, however. If you try this, let us know how well it works. ...Maven
