Gosh Glenn, your other habits are good! Maybe you can fix this one..... Seriously, you should read a little article by a guy named Phil Sharpe called...."And the Angels sing for you!" Very funny and very sobering.... The article in 'Guns and Ammo' (?) about 'Barnabus Blastalot' and his favorite gunpowder 'Blast-o' was too much too! ( Or how to blow up a rifle in a single shot!) Anybody else remember these?

Hi everybody. My name is Glenn, and I'm a hot loader. I know that I shouldn't, but I just can't help it. It must be a disease because I wouldn't do it on purpose. I just have to find out what would happen with only one more grain of powder.

The 17gn load was a little sticky on extraction from the Blackhawk. I guess that I should stay with the 14gn load as a reasonable max.

I was wondering if 820 is really AA/Scott 4100, because it seems to be a little slower than AA#9, but pretty close. I've found that 4100 builds pressure faster in the 357 than my 44 mag also....

I think I found the culprit on my blown primers in the Rossi rifle. The fireing pin extends way too far. Even with light loads the fireing pin is makeing a very deep impression. I'm thinking that the fireing pin pierced the primer and added to the problems.

I shot the heavier charges in the 4 5/8 blackhawk today.
WC820 C358-180RF WSPM primer win case 1.58" col
13gns 1080fps 40rnd average.
14gns 1163fps
15gns 1204fps
16gns 1362fps
17gns 1417fps sticky extraction.
I'm thinking that the 15gn load should be max in the Pistol.

Thanks, I'll try that and see how it compares.

Lar45,
AA9 = Ramshot Enforcer which is in Quickload.

Another way to look at it, how much pressure required to achieve 1724 fps in 20" barrel like your 15 gr. load.

H110 generates 36,348 psi to achieve 1727 fps/20"

Enforcer generates 39,334 psi to achieve 1724 fps/20"

Quick and dirty Quickload estimate using Ramshot Enforcer:

seating depth 0.420"
weight 184.2 gr.
charge 15 gr.
6" velocity predicted = 1439 vs 1316 in your Blackhawk
20" velocity predicted = 1786 vs 1724 in your Blackhawk
pressure = 45,098 psi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rifle data is pretty close, with Enforcer appearing to be just a hair faster than your lot of WC820. This agrees with my personal experience with WC820 -- usually about 50 fps slower than Enforcer. Close enough to use for load development, and erring on the safe side. The 17 gr. load produces 71,000 psi. Personally, I don't care to exceed the SAAMI spec of 35,000 psi.
