458 Lott cast bullet loads ?
Gents, I am about to take delivery of my Ruger #1 458 Lott, formerly a 458 Win. I have obtained the following wheel weight bullets: 420 flat nose, 492 pointed and 520 round nose, none with gas checks. I plan to try 50gns XMP5744 with the 420 for about 2050fps and 47gns XMP5744 with the 492 for about 1900fps. Any other load recommendations for these bullets? Thanks!

Bren Mk1
I feel quite confident that you can safely load your Lott with 5744. I use this powder extensively in my .416 Rigby and .404 Jeffery rifles with excellent results.

By starting very low, somewhere in the area of 35 grains or thereabouts, you can readily work the charge up a grain or two at a time until you reach the REDUCED-SPEED velocities you're looking for. By this, I mean that 5744 is not a good powder for full-power loads.

My Rigby with a 365-grain bulet and 52 grains of 5744 yields around 2050 fps.

I suspect that your proposed loads will turn out to be practical, but please start very low and work up. 5744 will tolerate this method of load development. Enjoy!
