Has anyone used surplus powders in Model 94 30-30 with cast bullets?

I don't have a .30-30, but I've heard that WC-844 and WC-846 does real well, and can't help but think 4895 would also.-JDL

I've used WC820 and WC680 for velocities in the 1400fps range with a 165 cast. I don't remember the charge weights right off the top of my head though.

Junior, 844 would be ideal, and so would 846. For most known lots of each, 846 would be 3 grains slower. Use these powders for full loads, i.e., 1800 fps or better. H335/BLC2 rough equivalents. ... felix

Thanks, Felix. I'll go for a jug of WC846 as it is a little slower than 844. Ought to give a little higher loading density. Has anyone measured the VMD of 846?

I have used WC-860, WC-852(slow lot), WC-844, IMR-7383, SR-4759, and WC-680. The 852 has performed the best with the Lyman 311041. The IMR-7383 may be a close second--I haven't really had time to try it much. The WC-844 was O.K. but I think it works much better with jacketed bullets--similar to H-335. All the other ones performed well at 50 yards, but accuracy always seems to deteriorate at the 100 yard mark. Good-luck...BCB

I've been using wc852 (from Barlett) in the 30-30.
lyman 31141 (174 gr WW)
wc852 (132.5 gr) (in my gun only)
RP case

bullets are seated with horniday seating die then crimped with Lee Factory Crimp die
This load has proven to be accurate in my rifle, however i'm going to drop back to 30.gr and start working up a load using federal mag. primers. As this is a ball powder and all the gerues recommend using mag primers with it.

I have never shot anything BUT cast bullets and surplus IMR4895 in my 30-30.



It sure worked better with 308 dies and seated so long the rounds had to be fed single shot, than with 30-30 dies and seated so the rounds would feed.

Which batch of WC852? There are three different speeds of WC 852 that are sold and I think Jeff has sold all three at one time or another!

132.5 grains of WC 852 in a 30-30? must take one heck of a drop tube to do that one and even at that I bet it is slightly compressed.

Has to be a typo, no powder can fit that much in a 30-30 case. I would say he meant 32.5 grs.
