9,3 cast bullets

A couple of experienced shooters down here are producing some hard cast bullets with gas check for this caliber, I think it will be a good option.
I don't have ANY experienced using cast bullets, what must I learn about them?

I must reload lighter loads to avoid to much lead in the barrel?

It will damage my barrel?

Please help!!
I have enough factory bullets but I want to know if I must buy some of them.

Lorenzo a thorough answer to your question would about require a chapter length piece. If you read the archives here much can be learned about cast shooten.

NO-- cast bullets will not damage your barrel. If anything they will smooth it after prolonged use.

It is best to use loads up to 2000 fps in our US calibers normally going 2500-2700 for jacketed speeds. I am one of few who bother going to the velocity limits of cast, which are near or matching jacketed velocities. That is a de-tale oriented game. Yet the most enjoyable aspect of shooten cast are the reduced loads, for recoil and economy-- and just plain having fun.

You need to know:

--cast bullets work best and lead the least in a bore thoroughly cleaned of jacket material before shooten cast

--how and if a gun leads is determined by several factors. You mention hard lead-- it is best at or slighly over the diameter of your gun's throat, being the bullet diameter.

Cast bullets in rifles are primarily used by reloaders for recreational shooten. While adapting them to equal the performance of jacketed is possible and often fairly simple, it requires an investment of time handloading to learn the concepts of shooten cast. These aren't difficult to master... best thing if your interested is dive in and try some.

I shoot the 9.3 x 57 built on a Swedish Mauser action. The cast bullet is from an NEI mould. I think the weight is about 290 grs. I can reach copper ammo velocity without any problems with this heavy bullet and the small 57mm mauser case...about 1800 fps. I use .375 gas checks ( they do size down ) and a .368 sizer die with Felix lube. I started with 35 Rem. data for cast bullets and worked up from there. Barrel leading has not been a problem. wrg-inc
