Re: Cast bullet loads for 308.....

David and felix,
And I'll add to that with the Lee C309-113-FP; 25gr Rx7, does well in my 30-30's, with and without microgroove. Pushes 2100-2300fps depending on the gun, nicely accurate.
No problem in the bigger 308 case I'm sure, and also does well in the 307Win. Great lil boolit!
Cheers,

1. Lyman # 311644, 25.0 gr. IMR-4895, one gr. tuft of dacron. Does 2.5 MOA at 300 yards.

2. Lyman # 311344, 17.5 gr. H-4227, one gr. tuft of dacron. Does 1.5 MOA at 200 yards.

3. RCBS #30-180-FN, 16.0 gr. Alliant 2400. Does 1.5 MOA at 100 yards.

Load #1 shot from a Savage 110S silhouette rifle, .308 Win. caliber, 1 in 12" twist.

Loads #2 and 3 shot from a Winchester M70, .308 Win., 1 in 12" twist.
These are the loads that have worked for me. Your results may vary. Alloy is 10 lbs. WW, one lb. linotype, 1/3 cup magnum bird shot and a three foot piece of 95/5 percent lead free solder.
Bullets as cast have a BHN # of 14 one wek after casting, and if oven treated, run around 28-31 BHN after one week. Groups were fired with oven treated bullets.

The one load I've settled on uses about 14.5 grains of Unique and a 165 LFN. I use this for my cast boolit silhouette rifle and it dispatches the rams with ease at 200 yds.

I've been shooting 36.0 gr. IMR 7383 under the SAECO #305 bullet designed for the .303 with great results. I water quench 'em, size to .311, open the case necks with the expander from a 32 H&R die set, and thumb seat the bullets. The powder sets the seating depth. This load runs about 2100 fps with SDs in the single digits, and shoots into 1.5 inches at 200 yards on a calm day.
