Russian boar in the USA?
Gents:
Any of you have experience with a gent in Michigan who calls himself "Moose Man" who hunts Russian boar? The fella really hypes the hunt in "kill or be killed" fashion and his property is rather small so it seems like a put and take hunt. On the other hand, it looks like a fun experience and the hogs are huge. It would be overkill, but to shoot one or two boars with a big double rifle (.600 or 8-bore) would be a fun trip.
What say you all? Any of you done this? Prices are not listed on the website, so what is the cost? Length of the hunt? Anything else I should know?
Thanks for your time. Post pics if you have them.
Cal

Cal:

A couple of years back, there was an episode of the SCI TV show (Expedition Safari is the name I think)where they hunted the boars in Michigan. It looked quite sporting. I have no idea if it the same company.

How big is the hunting area?

I drove up to one in northern Maine when I lived there and they had pure wildboars, but the place was not bigger than 20 acres. Heavy timber, and about 20 feeders. Not my idea of a good time.

Every 8th step you ran into a red stag, bull elk, fallow buck or sika buck.

My wife and I stayed there 3 years ago. I hunted during the winter (annual snowfall in our area is 240 inches on average). The area is around 250 acres in size, and topography is from hilly areas to cedar swamps The hunt can be as varied, you can sit in blinds or climb over downed cedar trees and be up to your knees in water & mud. The folks that guide & provide the cooking are first class. During the summer months I believe Greg also provides fishing trips out on Lake Superior.

I havre heard many stories of the difficulties of getting rifles in and out of Argentina. What is your take on this? I won't hunt with rented firearms. If I was ever to go to Argentina I would look for buffalo, stag, boar, and blackbuck. Don't know which double I would bring.

I am with you Cal. I HATE shooting anyone else's guns. I did it last year in New Zealand. It is the one and only time I did it. I did not care for it.

Yup Cal---George & Whitworth are right. That's my little fella & for the most part, Moose brings them in from Canada. It's still a pretty fun place with decent accommodations especially if the wife wants to come along & maybe run into Marquette on the lake to shop. He also runs a fishing gig on the lake but I've never tried.

Cal,
I just saw this thread of yours and want to let you know that (naturally) Texas has some Russian boars also. These were imported some years back and stocked on a ranch near Abilene:

Just released onto ranch:

All puffed up for a fight!

BTW, you do not need a "pure Russian boar" in Texas to have a nice head and shoulder mount:

About 35 years ago a guy bought a large ranch east of Ennis, Tx (near Alsdorf if you want to see the land on Google Earth), high fenced it added a bunch of whitetails and some Axis deer and had a really nice hunting ranch. Then he apparently thought it would be a good idea to put some Russian boars on it...and in about 3 weeks they had torn the fences up and escaped, along with most of his deer. This place is only about a mile or so from the Trinity River, so the habitat was pretty good for the pigs and they flourished for a while. I'm sure the strain was diluted with the feral pigs that have run the river bottoms for years, but occasionally I still see a picture of a pig taken along the Trinity that looks like it definitely has some Russian boar blood.
