CA Pig Hunting is the Best...

Mike_DettorreCA Pig Hunting is the Best...
...it must be because it is certainly the most expensive...
$41.20 for a hunting license now and $19.70 for a pig tag this year.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

SevenxbjtI hear ya. 10 years ago, not tag needed, 5 years ago books of 5 tags were $20 or if I remember right, now $20 per, yikes. The other day, I watched 11 hogs come out of dirt tank of ours that they were rooting up the sides and under the trees where the cattle try to get out of the heat. Just in theory of course, I wonder how many times $220 in tags actually get bought to correct a problem like that?

mousegun1Maybe arnold is going to balance the budget by selling pig tags?

txhunter77That's flat out insane. To actually issue tags to hunt non-indigenous animals. I mean, I understand requiring people to have a hunting license no matter what your hunting, but a tag for a species that is as invasive and destructive as hogs, that's just stupidity. I suppose there is a season for them too!

CrazyhorseconsultingOkay fellow Texans, lets not get too damn cocky on this one.
I believe, that if TP&W can ever get a handle on actual numbers of feral hogs here in the state, and figure out a way of realistically managing them, we will end up with seasons and bag limits.
Same thing with the Mountain Lion.
TP&W has no real idea of how many lions are in the state, that is why all they want to know if one is killed, by any means is basically, where it was killed.
The fact that Texas is mostly Private Land is the main reason there aren't seasons on either Feral Hogs or Lions at present. JMO.

Kyler HamannYou're not factoring in the cost of bureaucracy...
If you do the math they're right on track. When the tags where introduced in 1991 they promised to keep them priced at $1 each ("simply to pay for a method of tracking the pig take"). So by calculating in the government propensity to overspend and overtax I'm sure they think they're giving us a deal according to their original promise.
Don't forget that by DFG's own numbers around 94% of the take of this non-native species is on private land.
Do you know that at least in CA you can buy some land - get a permit to build a pond then pay to have it built. Get a permit to drill a well, and pay to have it drilled. Then pay for the power to pump the water into the pond. Buy some fish to put in the pond. But to fish for them you need to buy a license from DFG. That's on your land and habitat you created and paid for... they're even your fish, but you still need a license. That one really boggles my mind.
And so it goes. A few years ago the guide license fee doubled in one jump. Last month my real estate license (because the outfitting is SO PROFITABLE) doubled as well.

The enviros have stopped the hunting of Mtn lions, further damaging the deer herd here at least. The funny thing is , the enviros are short sighted. They will make things difficult for folks who own large tracts of private land, where the wildlife is. Someday they will go to far and those landowners like myself will sell this overvalued land to a developer to be cut up into ranchettes and buy land in a state more friendly to business in general and production Ag in particular. Then with the land all cut up no one wins. But why try to be reasonable? As long as junkies have clean needles and illegals have health care who cares about people trying to maintain something for the next generation. Sorry to get off topic, but the fish pond example a post ago was just to perfect an example of our wonderful socialist state. On a more positive note, if a $20 tag sounds like a deal still, there are alot of pigs down here in the southern San Joaquin valley. At least they don't sell turkey tags yet.
Thats because in CA, no one marches for common sense. And it seems we are a habitually masochistic society with the urge to continuously elect nimrods who are unfriendly to out cause.

Sounds about right for our wonderful state. You know they don't really want you guiding right? Then no one would want to hunt- and the state could slide down into hippy happiness.

That's right because folks who use common sense are at work during prime marching hours.

I understand your message and I agree. But be aware that "nimrod" actually means "an expert, or one devoted to hunting" Actually, the opposite of what you intended! No harm!

I would get into the etymology, but it has something to do with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.
I am trying to get an alternate meaning for Democrat, "Can't live within ones means", but I've been rejected at least 5 times.
