RobinOLocksleyFederal Power-Shok Soft Point (.30-06, 180gr)
Gentlemen,
Shall be much obliged if you could share your experience with me. How effective are the .30-06 180gr Federal Power-Shok soft points on feral pigs (upto 250 lbs.) out to 100 yards and how do they compare against the .30-06 S&B 180gr soft points? Thank you very much.
Best-
Locksley.

WhitworthMy brother-in-law has used the 180 Power-Shoks (.30-06) on a few hogs and it has worked like a charm. I wouldn't hesitate to use this load. Can't speak for the S&B ammo as I have used it in other calibers, but never on live game.

I have killed pigs with various calibers using various bullets, and though pigs do have a shoulder shield, they do not wear kevlar.
I would use what ever was cheapest between the Federal and the S&B and not worry about it.
The 180 gr,30-06 load has accounted for alot of game over the years. The may be newer chamberings that shoot flatter ,hit harder, etc, but the '06 will still get'er done.

buckoA 30-06 with ANY 180 grain bullet at one hundred yards or less will work as well or better than anything else you could use.

RobinOLocksleyThank you all for responding to my post. The reason I asked this question is that I read somewhere the S&Bs have woefully thin jackets and as a result may fail on thick skin game.Any experience with the S&Bs?Thank you.

SIKA98KA friend was using S&B ammo in his 6,5X57R. They were doing very little expanding. Admittedly this was on relatively thin skinned sika hinds. That was 131gr heads.
A change of head to Hornady 129gr SST,s produced smiles all round. Except on the deer.

GatogordoBoth will probably work but I would use the Federal to hunt with and target practice with the S&B. I've used S&Bs in 6.5x55 and .30-06 and I find them to be really soft, meaning rapid expansion. I'd use them on pigs but would prefer another bullet if possible. I also have not found them to be overly accurate.

rickt300I have had good luck with the S&B SPCE bullets out of my 7x57. I kind of think you will get good enough penetration with just about any 180 grin bullet from a 30-06. I have used the Powershoks in both 150 and 180 grains on deer and had good results. I use 165 grain Remington PSPCL's in my reloads with perfect satisfaction on hogs and deer. My use of factory loads is to use them up and then load the brass.
