GeedubyaTwo hits and a miss.
Two hits....
Went to my hill country hunting lease last Thursday.
Hill country view and a hoglet taken at 180 yds. with my 300 H&H and 180 gr. TSX’s
Got this one at the “canopy” early Friday morning @ 180 yds.
Got this one at the “Cliffs” late Saturday evening. I was surprised to get him. I had missed the best javelina I’ve ever seen in my hunting career about an hour earlier. I scrambled down the rock face and looked for blood until it was getting near dark thirty. I climbed back up to my perch and was getting ready to pack up when I spied this eating size boar. Nailed him @ 168 yds.
My miss.
I was sitting at the Cliffs. It is at the top of a vertical rock face and where I sit about 100 ft. above a stream-bed looking out over a bowl of say 300 acres or so.
I've a spin-cast feeder set up about 168 yds. from where I sit.
I've mentioned that I've hunted here seven or eight years. Never seen the first javelina. I keep several game cameras set out. This guy was in one picture out of 1,100 plus.
At least I believe it was him, or his bigger brother.
Anyway Saturday evening about 7PM I was sitting there watching. I scan with binocs to see what can be seen. I was looking through the binocs at the hills on the other side of the bowl. Sometime Aoudad frequent those hills. Out of the corner of my eye I registered movement. I looked left and saw a black shape take two steps and dissapear behind a bush. Now mind you I only saw it out of the corner of my eye. It did not walk/stride like a hog. I was in a quandry as it reminded me of the way a bear walks/strides. I watch to see if it comes out for about 20 minutes to no avail, so I start glassing again. Same thing happened, only directly below me. I could see it was a Javelina and a monster. It immediately melted into the juniper and scrub oak. It was traveling a game trail I waited another 10 minutes or so and it came out about 150 yds. down the stream bed. I sit on a stool. No way to lay down an rest my rifle on a pack. I got set up on my shooting stix trying to rest my elbows on my knees and employ my sling to get a steady hold shooting at a downward angle of 20 degrees or so. No way, anyway, due to the way he reacted I'm pretty sure I missed. Sure hope so. That would have given me some bragging rights for about six months.
Well, there's always next time. Seems there is a pack of six or seven that there are four or five pix in the last 45 days.
Anticipation will be killing me till I can get back.

Bobby TomekEnjoyed the pics and write-up immensely, my friend! Thanks for sharing. And as for the javelina, I am confident he'll be ground-checked before much longer...

Oh, a question: what power scope is that on your rifle, and what reticle?

Bobby,
I know you and I've discusses the 2.5 x 8 x 36 Leupold, but the scope on the rifle in picture is a Leupold 4.5 x 14 x 40, Duplex reticle VX3 CDS.
I've resisted the temptation to shoot much past 300 yards in the past.
However I have begun to stretch out a little bit lately, making kills last season at 264 and +/-310 yds.
I'm setting up an old spot that nobody is hunting. I call it the canopy. It is on one of the highest points at our lease.
I can see to the horizon for about 200 degrees of the compass.
I have a shot at 168-180 yds,
250 yds, 610 yds and from 1,000 out.
The gatepost at 10 o'clock to the opening if IIRC is =/- 610 yds. Where it opens up and the road curves is about a grand IIRC.
Here is a somewhat blurry pix of a turkey strutting at 1,200 yds shot with a 200 mm autofocus lens, taken from the "canopy". It's a blast to just sit up there and watch.
I don't plan on shooting deer at long range, but I think it might be fun to see if I can, as you put it, "perforate" some hogs on a consistent basis at distance.
I plan to load some of the new 190 gr. long range accubonds to between 2900 and 3000 fps in the H&H. I'll send in to Leupold with the velocity and ballistic co-effecient and have them send me a custom dial. Should be good to at least 600 yds. If that don't work, I've got my 7stw and 338 RUM.
