chalk up another kill for the 30-30/Barnes Blackout combo...

Around midnight, I decided to check on our big orange fur baby and see if Marmalade was ready to come inside. Almost always, I take the little thermal Leupold monocular with me to see if anything is stirring. The first thing I noticed is that the deer had circled the wagons, so to speak, and were all staring back towards the creek.

I ushered Marmalade inside, grabbed my 30-30 and set up shop on my shooting rest. Within minutes, my eyes adjusted to the strong moonlight, and I quickly noticed something out of place against a light-colored patch of grass near the creek bank.

Looking through the Docter Basic 2.5-10x50 at 8x, there was no doubt this was a hog. So at my first opportunity, I put the red dot of the scope on the vitals and dropped the hammer.

The 110 grain mono Blackout bullet from Barnes took the hog very tight behind the shoulder and exited virtually the same spot on the other side. The wound channel was impressively wide, and the lungs were mush. The exit through the hide was the size of a quarter.

The hog made perhaps 10 yards after the shot before tipping over.

Bobby

You sure do well with a single shot.

Thanks for the heads up.

What's your count so far for the year?

Any hog down is a good thing. This one seems to be ill or dehydrated or something. The ribs and hams seem way undersized. Anyway, congrats on a fine shot.

CB-

Good catch! This was a morning photo in daylight -- hours after I shot it. It was split at the back to remove backstraps and the larger portions from shoulders/hams. It is what some would call a gutless method. So, that's why it looks a bit on the poor side as much of the meat was already gone.

Here is a phone photo taken right after it was shot to show all the frothy lung blood and tissue outside the body cavity from the 110 grain Blackout bullet. As you can see, he is plumper here ha ha. On a bigger boar with a heavy shield, you can't tell the meat was removed prior to a photo as the gristle plate firms things up and doesn't let it sag in as much.
