Are most hogs killed with knives?
I have never been hog hunting before and I am suprised to see that most hogs it seems are killed with knives? It seems to me that the anti-hunting groups would be all over that. I believe in quickly killing game, is this a humane way of harvisting the animal?

Only strange people like Andre and Juan use knives. The great majority are taken with guns !! There have bee some excellent videos posted here [ do a search] that show how it's properly done and then it's humane .A half dozen good dogs and a good knife and it can be done. Not for the faint at heart ! 45-70 works well against even the biggest. I must be strange - I stick a few each year.

Also enjoy shooting too!

I'm not fussy, as long as I'm bustin' hogs!

By FAR most hogs are taken with firearms. I would even bet more are taken with archery gear than with knives.

Knives are the extreme sport of hog hunting. I'm guessing (having never tried it) it has a rush similiar to a bullfight. Smiler

Also, adrenaline rush aside, knife hunters are there more for the dogs than the hogs, it seems to me. Just look at all the posts about the dogs they use.

In my opinion, any way we choose to kill a hog is more 'humane' than what Mother Nature dishes out when populations are not kept in check.

Sir Baden-Powell ,Col.Jeff Cooper and others said that the only gentle manner to kill a hog is with cold steel i prefer hunting with knives that anything else but you must love dogs ,and you have to be i a good shape ,yes you have possibilities of being injured not only by the boars ,you can get bitted by dogs ,fall from a horse ,put your feet in a hole while running tect ,etc, but after you killed it in this close and personal way the trophy has another meaning .Ihunt too with rifles pistols shotguns and bow but seeinf my dogos working is one of the great things of life.Juan

I like fenring, Juan, Andre etc. must be very strange as I do it every week. Here in Hawaii by far the most hogs killed are with knives by a very wide margin. Although some do carry firearms it is mostly for protection and safety in case the dogs get in a bad situation and we cant grab the hog and have to shoot it.

My boyfriend kills at least 100+ hogs a year with knives only. Still trying to figure out a way to get over to Argentina to hunt with Juan and his Beautiful Dogo's.

Aloha!!!

UltraMag, Juan and Andre, I did not mean the word strange in a derogatory sense .I've read all of your posts and am fully aware of what is involved [some of those things I don't have !]. UltraMag ,those numbers are very interesting , good work! Maybe if I saw it directly instead of a video I would have a different perspective. clap

I was amazed my first time how quickly a hog dies when stuck in the heart. The first hog I ever stuck (also the first I'd ever seen before) was in the heart and when I twisted the knife there was almost an explosion of blood over my hand and his legs went out on him. I had comented later on how a rifle shot to the heart would not have been any quicker.

Mete- No worries and definitely no offense taken I acually wrote that and meant it in a cheerful way as us hog hunters are a "Strange" lot animal. Anyway seeing it live is much better than on a video no doubt. If youre ever in Hawaii on the Island of Oahu give me a shout maybe you can tag along and maybe stick one for yourself Big Grin

I also agree with the others who posted that a knife to the heart is an extremely quick humane kill.

Happy Huntin'!!!

I do a lot of guiding for Hogs with Dogs and Knives here in Texas. As mentioned above, when a hog is stabbed in the heart it expires very quickly. It is a very exciting way to hunt, but this up-close and personal experience is not for everybody. That being said, I have never had a person that we have taken out not have a great time, and not feel a personal sense of satisfaction that they were able to quickly kill their quarry in a situation that had them a little frightened.

Amen to UltraMag, here in Hawaii the vast majority of pigs are knifed because the majority of pig hunters use dogs and the safest way to kill a pig without risking the dogs is with a knife, don't want a stray bullet hitting a valuable hound. Hawaii also has few places where the pig habitat even allows a firearm due to heavy vegetation which the pigs prefer, and where dogs are a must to get to even see a pig. I prefer a heart stab but have seen throat cuts work effectively too. Either spot is quick and humane. I do prefer to hunt without dogs, more challenging, and I get to shoot my gun but less chance of success by a longshot.
