Well, it’s been a long time – more than 3 months – since I last pulled the trigger on a hog. But I finally felt somewhat decent this morning and drove to a spot where hogs have been wreaking havoc. It wasn’t exactly hunting per se as I walked maybe 40 yards to a fenceline, where a post (and a small range bag) would serve as a rest from my vantage point.
There was barely enough light to see when I spotted movement, and by the time I had my scope up, I knew I’d soon have an opportunity, although the range was a bit farther than I would have preferred. It was still too gloomy for the rangefinder, so I guesstimated the hog at 300 yards and rested the duplex crosshairs of the Minox 3-9x40 right on top of the hog’s back and directly above the front leg. At that range, I figured the 150 grain Accubond from the 30-30 Ackely Improved barrel, which has a muzzle velocity of 2577 fps, should be just over 9” low, and on a larger hog, I felt this hold should be just right. With the hog stationary and broadside, I touched off a shot, and the audible “whap” in the still morning air of a bullet breaking bone was a welcome sound. I quickly reloaded and regained the sight picture, but the hog was on its side and not moving. The range later proved to be 280 yards -- my second-longest shot on a hog -- and the bullet took the hog high on the shoulder and exited. The top of the lungs had major damage, and the bullet’s impact was near enough the spine to impart ample shock to put the hog down on the spot.
Today’s hog was the first animal I have taken with this 30-30 AI barrel and the first for the Minox scope as well. Suffice to say, I was happy with not only the barrel and scope but the 150 grain Accubond, which left a nickel-sized exit through the thick, mud-caked off-side hide of the hog.
With my health issues not giving me a full reprieve, I was not able to butcher the hog but gave it away to someone who will make good use of it. I did stick around for the field-dressing, though, as I HAD to know how the bullet performed.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

As you noted, this one did have some girth to it. I'd say it went 195-200, though it was not weighed. WHen I have them on the ground, I always try and estimate a weight before getting it on the scale, and I'm generally pretty close. If this one was not right at 200, it was very close.

Yes, I do enjoy those longer shots. That alone is a thrill in itself...
I don't shoot at game much farther than that, though, but out to 300 yards, I have the utmost confidence in my gear.

DesertRamGood showing Bobby. I have a .30-30 AI barrel for my Contender (13") and love it. I have been shooting 125 grain BTs and they perform very well.

Bobby: If you feel up to it, could you weigh your 30/30 AI case empty and than filled to the case mouth with water to determine case capacity? I will do the same with my 308 Bellm and than we would have a comparison. I just got a 308 Bellm barrel in 21 1/2" barrel and I promise to share velocities, case capacity, etc. with you. I am interested in how the 2 cases compare. Thanks.

Bobby TomekI don't have any cases that are near the max length of 2.0395" as the fireformed brass draws from its length and usually winds up around 2.017-2.018. Even the brass that has been fired 5-6 times now isn't even't half-way to the max length (that's why I like those Ackley rounds as trimming is very infrequnet if you don't push things too hard and don't overwork the brass).
So, I firformed a new piece of Federal factory ammo. Its length is 2.0172, and it weighs 135 grains. Filled with water, the case sent the scale to 183.2, which equates to 48.2 grains of liquid in the case if my math is correct today.
I am loading 38 grains of Varget beneath the 150 grain Ballistic Tip and Accubond for 2577 fps measured at 15' from the muzzle of the 24" barrel.

Bobby: Thanks for measuring the case capacity. Measured the same way, my 308 Bellm case holds 58.6 grains of water. The 308 JDJ holds 68 grains I have been told but I do not have a case to measure myself.

Bobby TomekI got that buttstock from Jacob Meyer at highplainsgunstock.com out of Nebraska a couple of years ago and really like it. The comb height on that buttstock is perfect and a vast improvement from the factory stuff. THe Pegasus thumbhole he offers is REALLY nice, too.
The forend comes from Dave Dolin (goes by Dave D. on the Specialty Pistols forum). Both of those fellows do great work, are reasonably-priced and have quick turnarounds.
Another guy on the SP board is Tony G. He has a banner ad on that site and makes very nice forends. He just got into making buttstocks recently after he made one for himself, posted a picture and got inundated with requests.

I've only had it a very short time but do like it -- a lot. It compares favorably with the Monarchs and Conquests and provides superb resolving power under low-light, low-contrast situations, conditions in which lesser scopes fail miserably.
The Minox reticle is slightly thinner than that of the Nikoplex but heavier than the Leupold duplex, but I certainly can't fault it for that. For my purposes, it does quite nicely.
