Pig gun a la TV
Watched that Redjacket TV gun program .They developed an AR-15 based .458 SOCOM. That idea was not theirs of course but it was interesting to see it. The 458SOCOM matches the factory loads like the 300 gr @ 1850 that I use in my SS.They used a 500 gr which seems too heavy to me. I'd use a premium 300 or the A-frame 350 even on a 500 lb pig.
Have any of you used a 458 SOCOM ?If so what are your conclusions ?

Very versatile round. I have a bolt gun and also one on an AR platform. The 500 grain is intended to be used subsonic with a suppressor. Since it's starting out at .5 inch, it really doesn't need to expand to do its job.

Barnes now has a 250 gr TTSX which only adds to the possibilities.

"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Don't forget the 300gr TTSX SOCOM bullet.

MOA, I didn't want to say that ! When I saw one of them ask about an Arisaka " how does this thing work !! " I didn't take the program seriously ! jumping

ive had a RRA .458 socom for about 4 yrs, and have shot both the 350 gr and 4oo gr corbon factory ammunition... the 350's feed but it shoots the 400 gr stuff better, when it feeds... seems that when corbon has loaded several differnt bullets of 400 gr weight, differnt ogives... and that makes a huge feeding difference.. the older stuff will stovepipe and the newer will feed like slick snot... ive got the older stuff, and my gun needs feed ramp work... RRA seems to ignore older ammunition problems, and will only work at making the newer ammo feed...i looked at tiggertates's RRA a couple months ago and his rifle's feed ramp differs from mine... mine is headed to RRA soon... i plan on putting a can on mine eventually, and haven't handloaded anything yet, but the 500 gr stuff is intereting......

go big or go home ........

Kabluewy,
Right on about the 300gr Barnes SOCOM bullet. I use it sometimes in my Browning BLR .450 Marlin since this gun has a clip magazine, not a tubular one. Excellent bullet.
