Knife Recommendation for Hogs

So I'm thinking this might be a good idea and started to look for a knife. I really like some of the custom knives but can't really afford 300 to 400 dollars for a knife. I started looking at Cold Steel knives. They make a Boar Hunter and quite a few other knives that look like they'd do the job. The Peace Keeper I looks like it'd be perfect with the double edge but I've seen the Trailmaster praised quite a bit. Can't seem to make my mind up so I thought I'd get some feedback. Any info and guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Sorry folks, I should have been more specific. I've got good skinning knives, I need one good knife for hunting them. Back to the Cold Steel products, that OSS looks pretty nice.

LWD, Funny you should mention Marttini knives, I used one to gut and skin my deer last year, my brother was teasing me because it didn't have a guthook and sawback. I showed him how to do a deer the right way!!!LOL Joe

I stuck a nice 125 pounder a few years ago in Fl with nothing more than a good 'ole Kbar. Killed it dead. You don't NEED a big expensive knife to kill most hogs (at least the ones that I would hunt with a knife) you just need to reach the heart/lung area or the spinal column. If I were going after anything much over 150-200lbs, I would probably opt for a firearm. JMO

You jump on a 200 pound hog with just a knife, dont miss or you might be sporting some trophy wounds of your own.

I've got a few from when I was young and stupid.

I like Larry's knife a lot.

That particular knife does not sport stag handles. but nylon mircarta handles. I do hunt with knives with stag handles and not have found it to be a problem.

The real trick is not the knife, just about anything over a 6" blade will do, though I like them a bit longer. I hunt with everything from 6.5" to 10.5". The cold steel blades mentioned by Joe would be excellant as is your Kbar.

The real secret is to have a good catch dog or two, make mine Dogos please.

I'm a huge fan of my M16 bayonette, M7 version. The blade is a shade over 7inches long and double bladed on the top side for several inches.
They are fairly inexpensive and have a natural hilt and thumb rest.

Goosejoe- As Larry and others have said they are very good choices. Sometimes it comes down to personal taste or situations etc. As Larry pointed out almost anything can be used to stick a hog. Ive had to use small pocket knives to dispatch boars because my main knife was lost while trying to get to the dogs.

I personally use the cold steel trailmaster because I use it as a multi-purpose tool. Pig sticker,hammer,prybar,brush cutter etc and it has never failed me

Larry- Catch dogs sure do make it a hell of a whole lot easier LOL!!! Just had to do a little hand to hand with a couple boars pushing 200# plus without the dogs and it sure was EXCITING as you can imagine. But the dogs were beat and I wasnt about to have them walk away. Lost 3 dogs to those boars and one almost put me on his kill list but luck was on my side and I was able to come out the winner in the end.

As always if youre ever in Hawaii let me know you are always invited my friend.

Dom, I think catching, dispatching big boars without catch dogs is a job for my little .41 mag. But then again you are the master! I would love to hunt with you anywhere, but Hawaii would definetly be special.

Last time I was there was in the early seventies, stayed right on the beach on Uncle Sam's dime. Too bad I don't remember much.

For pig sticking specially in the first hunts use a big knife ,bowie like the ontario marine raides -very cheap- and with rubber or kraton grips ,then you can go to a double edge like the gerber mark11 but the wide knives gives you a more margin of mistakes .Juan

Larry, I am in total agreement with you but at the time had nothing more than my knife on my side. I am no master by any means just been mostly lucky all these years that I didnt end up on a boars wall LOL!!! But when I see the dogs down and hurt or dead I feel I owe it to them to do my utmost to get that boar as they gave thier all and I feel I owe them that much as well.

Early 70's was awhile ago seems like your due a return trip LOL!!!

All the above are good suggestions. I've thought about the Marine Raider that Juan mentioned. Wouldn't be suprised if it ends up in my collection.

I've discovered that you can make some awesome wounds with a relatively small knife if you do some cutting before you withdraw the knife from the hog. That said I like big knives.
