Bill/OregonDiseases in feral swine
We pretty much dealt with trichinosis in a previous thread. But when I posted an article from the Carlsbad paper about wild hog control on my Chaves, Eddy, Lincoln and Otero Counties Facebook page, several folks said they were advised by wildlife biologists that many of the hogs eradicated in New Mexico had pseudorabies -- and they wouldn't eat them.
Well, it didn't take much looking to find that pseudorabies is not a risk for humans, although it can affect dogs. But I was surprised to find tularemia can be an issue.

CrazyhorseconsultingBrucellosis is also a disease hogs can carry.

Bill/OregonRandall, yes, but fortunately it is not bovine brucellosis or our ranching friends would be in a terrible hurt. I am surprised though, given the number of fellas whose dogs often play a role in the hunt or recovery, that I have not heard of hunting dogs contracting pseudorabies.

Live OakPseudorabies is not common but I do know of several dogs that have caught it. It is ugly! It is a type of herpes. The itch is so bad the dog will eat a hole in itself. The only cure is death! I do know of two people that contacted swine brucellosis from dressing feral pigs. They were sick for months and would not touch a pig to drag it off! When they do the pig hunt here in Dewitt County, several times USDA checked all the pigs that came in for both. Out of 10000 # of pigs or more only two tested positive for bruce and one for pseudo. I always wear gloves of some type just to drag em off!
