Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

DesertRamAn old crappy picture, taken before I knew anything about posing critters or setting up for the shot. 260 pound Hill Country boar, 4.5" cutters.
This one's my "gotta call BS Hog." Whenever I see someone post on the net about their 500 pound pig that's actually smaller than this guy, I just compare it to him (he was weighed on a relatively reliable scale) and laugh. Without a scale, I would have guessed this thing much heavier than 260.
Second best, much lighter, but still good tusks.

Here is my warthog from SA. Not huge, but hey he's mine and thats all that matters!!
And here is a pic of my Bush Piggy also form SA...
And here is my "gotta call BS piggy" as well. He is my biggest one yet. He was taken on a west TX muley hunt on a friend's ranch. 432 lbs. on a certified cotton gin scale. He looked like a grizzly bear in that field!!
I have a few pics of some javelinas from over the years as well, but everybody knows what a Javie looks like. If ya've seen one, ya seen them all!
I've got all of them on the wall with them all together. I call it the "Ham Slam"!!!!

WhitworthScottyboy -- excellent! That Texas hog is huge! I have a real hankerin' to hunt Bush pig -- I understand that they are very illusive. They just look nasty! Did you have any of them mounted?
Here's another photo. Not big, not trophies, but they were a two-fer, falling to one 500 grain Hawk Deadsoft fired from my CZ .458 Lott -- oh, and they were GOOD eatin'!

Equinsu OchaWhitworth, i have all 4 of them mounted on the wall together.. I call it the "ham slam"!!
The bushpig was taken by pure luck. I was stalking a herd of Impala and they kept spooking just out of rifle range. After the third or fourth time of getting up on them and almost shooting, I was about to give up. I turned around after the impala had run off the last time, and I heard some leaves rustling about 10 ft. from me. I looked over, and lo and behold, there are 3 bushpigs just standing there looking around. I picked out the largest one and put one in him as quick as I could. After he dropped, the other two just stood, not knowing what to do. I finally had to yell at them to leave. I could have gotten all three, but the one I took was plenty for me..

NBHunterHere is my "best" hog. I took one on this trip a couple days later that may have been a couple pounds bigger but I still think this is my best. I've only taken five but that ain't bad for one trip. I think I was using a shorter barreled gun than most

Hawaiian_HunterMike, it's called a sense of humor, and you did ask for the best piggie, not the biggest. Here's my biggest a 300 lbs. Haleakala Pua'a, one of two shot that morning the second was 200 lbs.
Lucy my pet Wild Polynesian Pig I found wondering the forest above my home 5 months ago still my BEST piggie.
For the above picture my wife put the pink frilly thing on her on around Valentine's Day trying to make Lucy look pretty.
Very nice choppers on your warthog Mike, congratulations, did you have the head mounted? Always amazed at how large the tusks get on them warthogs in proportion to body size.
Wendell your pig is SCARY big, what a trophy, congratulations!

David CulpepperThe one from 2003 is mounted and added to my wall "Hog Heaven" see picture below, the smaller warthog on the wall is a female. The one from 2005 is at the Atlanta airport waiting for customs to clear, then it is off to the taxidermist.

I shot him on my ranch in October. It was my first outing after recovering from malaria, I was driving the Mule around, glad to be able to get out again, I sat on top of a cliff at sunset, 375 in my lap (not sure why, I never carry it on the ranch) I wasn't hunting, I was just goofing off.
I saw him run across the bottom field and thought, maybe I will shoot at it. Shot twice, on the run at about 200-230 yds.
Thought I missed. I just sat there and watched the sun set, then I headr a terrible gurgle/growl and realized that I did actually hit him. He fell in the middle of the road. Made it very convenient for photos.
I have no idea what he weighed, but I have never seen anything like him, ever before.

Wendell ReichSBT and 30-06 came to the ranch in Jan of '05 and we drank 30-06's whiskey and ate SBT's Bighorn Sheep and Elk steaks and shot my piggies.
A grand time was had by all.

Hawaiian_HunterHi Whitworth, I never noticed if these Hawaiian Pigs had longer legs Mainland counterparts, It may be an optical illusion from camera angle. Here's another shot but it doesn't show the legs just the front half. That's my son Isaac on the left.
There are 2 distinct types of pigs in the islands, the lowland pigs which have domestic blood so usually in various colors red, gray white, spotted, whereas the higher elevations (4000' and above) have the purer more ancient Polynesian Pigs which have the physical charactoristics associated with Wild Boar- pure black, long snout, straight tail, mane along back, thick hairs covering body, this is what Lucy is.
Yes she is very intelligent using a litter box within a couple days of finding her. She is also very curious, inquisitive, always wanting to know what we're doing and usually getting in the way for attention. Yesterday she dug a nice long body length hole next to her water bucket then proceeded to dumped her water bucket into the whole to create herself a wallow which she immediately and joyfully rolled into, smart indeed.
David, thanks for sharing the pictures of your amazing examples of warthog that bottom one especially, very nice.
Wendell, thanks for sharing the experiance getting your trophy boar, amazing that thing kept on running after being hit with a 375, i'm assuming H&H Magnum or was that 375 Winchester?

I have had an itch for a good Warthog since my first trip to Africa. I still don't have one. Except for one unlucky, smallish Warthog in Tanzania, the trophy Warthog has eluded me.
Yours make me want to go on a Warthog safari. Very nice!

AleAlonsoHi!, you guys should come to Argentina to hunt nice wild boars, we don´t really care about their weight, instead we measure their tusks. There are two well different types of boars: one type is like the ones you can hunt in east europe, big and heavy, nice tusks but not very long. The other type is much smaller, like de ones you can find in Spain. This ones have "the real stuff" in their mouths, very long and strong tusks (for a wild boar), reaching up to 12" once taken off from the skull(national record), normally being 9" or more and 1" thick or more.

What is amazing is that he got that heavy in what you'd otherwise consider hot and dry conditions. He looks just like the hogs coming out of Eastern Europe or Russia - cold winters, moderate summers (compared to TX), lots of trees... P.S. Food for thought for those of us advocate small calibers for pigs. Smallish pigs are not hard to kill, but once in a while... OK, I'm sure a headshot with a small caliber would have killed this one as well, but what if you had to dig a wounded pig like this out of a thicket after you had given it a bad headache...
(All this assuming you would follow up on a wounded animal, naturally...)
