Slow Locals
Took Styer to a local swamp this arvo, hoping to find a pig. Pulled up short of where I wanted to be but a bit wet to continue on. Threw the pack on and a last drink and we were of.Had gone about 100m and caught sight of movment in the paperbarks.
A small mob of pigs were coming out of the swamp almost straight to me. Settled Styer and into them. Dropped two as they made it to the long grass. Only sows but I was stoked.
Tried to get Styer to chase a couple of small ones , but he wasnt sure what he was supposed to do.
Dressed out and loaded for the chiller at home.
Used 358 with 225 hydros and 185 ACP's.
Appreciate the easy ones........
Heres a couple pics cheers Mick

Went back to the same spot tonight. Walked about 3km with real fresh sign. Found a good young boar just before dark. Shot him as he hackled up and walked across a rise in the paperbarks. Cleareda paperbark and poleaxed him with 270. Heres a pic cheers Mick

Mick:
Does look like you enjoy pigs. Wearing one in that last picture, haha!
Supposed to use a winch, not wrestle them!!

Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

Appreciate the photos, always good to see dead hogs. I'm curious about the full stocked 270. How long is the barrel and how do you like it? Do you tailor loads for it, and how is the noise/muzzle blast?

I ask because I'm contemplating a future short barreled mauser action build. I have all the parts, just trying to decide on barrel length.

Hogfarmer, the barrel is 19 1/2 inches,I dont notice any performance difference and the muzzle blast is no worse than a 243.
270 isnt my favourite cal, I bought it for the rifle and cant bring myself to cut it up and rebarrel.
Saying that I enjoy using it.
Ive Got a thing for stutzen style stocks!

Thanks for the feedback. I have a 700 with a 26" Shilen barrel, but it's a bit cumbersome for use in thick cover. I use the 6.8 round so I have a plethora of light 277 bullets around.

I think a short barreled 270 Win downloaded with light Barnes or NAB bullets would be just the ticket for the deep woods I hunt deer and hogs in.
