Finding hogs in a new area.
When frist starting to hunt a new area what are some of the things you look for when trying to locate these animals. I know they stick to river bottoms and stay around farms and fields. what are some of your favorite ways to find those big old boars. LLB

I look for footprints in the trail.
Look for where they have been feeding/ie. signs of "rooting" around. If they are in an area for a long time you can find their scat.
Look around any pool of water, ponds, wide spots in creeks etc.
If you have a river, be sure the wind is in your face and starting at day break walk along the river very quietly. Some times I even hear them squeeling or grunting.
If you think you have found a place that hogs frequent, dig a few holes and put some soured grain in them and cover them up.
If the hogs find it the ground will look like someone called in the artillery on you.

Be sure and take the meat home it is very good.
Even the meat from a couple over 300 lb boars was very good.

Walk the roads, thats what hogs do at night...corn the roads and check them in the early mornings..corn the roads and shoot them the next morning.

We will ride down the river bottoms, usually the brushiest places are where they will be. We find there sign in soft dirt, also see rubs on trees where they rub, have seen all the bark rubbed off trees. When you are real close to a bedding area you can smell them, a strong odor you cant mistake for anything else. Have also been in a stand and heard them fighting in the brush, stalked to them and had good luck that way. Have shot one and had other hogs in herd start fighting it as it died. Gives you a chance for another on if you want. [Big Grin]

Good luck and good shooting

Look for a rancher that has had all his feed for cattle eaten . Next door will be a farmer with most of his crops eaten . A little bit beyond them you will find both of their wives , mad as hell , because some inconsiderate beast just rototilled the most beutiful flower garden that either have created . This is where you will find the hogs you seek .
