Another interesting afternoon
About noon today I heard coyotes start yipping very close to my house. As I've lost chickens lately I immediately grabbed my frankenmauser whelen (it was handy) and headed out. My dogs circled around, caught their scent and headed south after them. I decided to go north just to see if the 'yotes had circled around. When I got to the edge of my upper pasture I didn't see any chicken thieves, but there was a sounder happily rooting up my pasture. I half crawled, half duck-walked until I was about 150 or so yards from the hogs. That was as close as I felt I could get so I dialed up the Leupold 1.25-4 VXR patrol to it's highest setting and settled it on a young sow. The Sierra 225 hit her through the heart lung area and that was that. First time in a long time that I've seen hogs in the middle of the day, they've mostly gone nocturnal.

Nothing like having your Whelen handy is there! Mine is on a Mauser action also and has a fine track record on feral hogs.

I have really enjoyed mine; so far, every pig has been a one shot affair. Only one ran any appreciable distance, and I found him piled up, stone cold dead.

Well done! Here, too, the hogs have gone nocturnal, and it's been quite a long time since I saw any in daylight. Glad you were able to to take advantage of their mid-day foraging! tu2 tu2

Let's put it this way, I work for one and know quite a few more.

I honestly wioshed the damn things could be managed, because they had a unique element to a hunt.

Don't get me wrong I love em. I would miss them if they were eradicated. They also make me popular with the neighbors. Smiler
