hogs feeding on oranges, affect the meat?
Got a buddy who's relatives have orange orchards, supposedly when the oranges start dropping they get a lot of pigs come in to eat them. Mentioned this to somebody and they told me it wouldn't be good to shoot one while they're eating the oranges.

Anybody know if this really matters? I don't think it would stop me anyways, just wondered for planning what to do with the meat. sausage I think would come out good regardless.

Thanks.

Seems nonsensical to me; afterall, we humans can eat peel and all without harmful effects ....so no toxins.....no harmful flavonoids or other secondary products ......maybe your info source just feels that it would be rude to shoot a hog whilst he/she is enjoying oranges.

If anything, it might give the meat a unique flavor....kinda like Fanta BBQ ribs.... Big Grin

I'd say enjoy both shooting them and eating them.

Hey, I live in Hanford, and my dad lives in Sanger. We shoot lots of hogs that are eating the heck out of oranges near Tivy Valley.

The last one I shot was just full of oranges. The meat is fine, no problems.

You simply will not be able to tell any difference in the meat at all. I have eaten LOTS of hogs that were eating oranges.

The problem these days is finding someone to process them. Not many places doing wild game currently.

We have oranges that border the lower end of some of our rangeland. Shot lots of hogs eating oranges, no difference in meat. Have fun.

I've shot both hogs and deer in orange groves. They ate just fine.

Given all the stuff pigs eat, I'd think oranges would be an improvement to their diets.

It saves you the trouble of making orange sauce for the meat ! The best I've had is acorns , for deer ,pigs or squirrels.I have heard that the best is grapes and other fruit from the Finger Lakes area of NY.

IIRC,orange peels have some level of toxicity.probably dont matter much to hogs, seeing how they love to eat diesel.

I field dressed a deer last Saturday moring in the back pasture of my friend David's ranch. We returned later that evening to dress another shot at dusk.

The only evidence that that a deer had been gutted there was that the grass where we were standing that morning was pushed down.

Hogs had come in and devoured everything, and I mean everything! The dirt wasn't even damp!

The only reason we knew they were hogs was from thier droppings!

They tell you not to shoot them because they want the hogs to clean up all the fruit on the ground!

Fruit will make a fat, thats why they like it so much. If I could figure out how to post a pic Id yall one that was pushing 350 lbs that came out of a grove. I know a lot of people that marinate and cook pork in oranges, if anything a hog in an orange grove will taste better.

I hunted for 17 years on a place with a lot of citrus groves. I shot countless hogs that were feeding on citrus. On the hogs we ate (as opposed to give away) I never noticed anything.

However, if you want to eat a hog, a big boar probably isn't that good anyway. A lot of things can taint the meat in spite of what they were eating.

No doubt. Ive always shied away from killing boar hogs, but this guy needed to go, he was tearing up too much pature. Id rather the cows ate the grass.
