billinthewildWest Texas - El Paso or close to
I'd like to head to Texas next weekend strictly for meat hunts. Hogs, exotics. Did not get one tag in Arizona this year. I live close to the New Mexico border and would like to get as close to El Paso as I can. Any ideas?
Thanks

DesertRamBill, I live just north of El Paso and typically drive down almost to San Antonio for my hogs hunts. I know there are hogs closer, but I've yet to find a suitable place. If you come across something that works out for you, I'd be interested to know of your results.
Good luck,
Troy

billinthewildTroy. What about exotics? Probaly more of the same. I have hunted a good deal in the Kerrville area, and Leakey, Mt Home, Hunt, Ingram, Concan, etc. But I hate to drive that far anymore. And an amigo in Mt Home tells me the hogs are getting scarce in his area.
Thanks for your input. Do you go to the El Paso SCI banquet in January?

DesertRamBill, I don't follow exotics all that closely, but I suspect there are some a little closer than hogs, particularly if you're interested in the desert variety like Auodad (Barbary sheep). As I'm sure you know, there are also decent populations of mule deer and javelina in parts of west Texas that are closer than hogs. With the possible exception of javelina, these hunts are likely considerably more expensive than hog hunts though.
I've heard reports of hogs in the hills near Cloudcroft, NM to the east of me, but have never personally encountered them. Similarly, there are supposed to be good numbers of hogs over in the Pecos valley - but again, I don't have any personal experience with them.
I've never been to an SCI banquet, though I keep threatening to go. Seems like when they roll around I've just spent my hunting allowance on actual hunting...

Bob in TXHey Bill,
I can hook you up on exotics and javelina if you will go as far as Ft. Stockton. Here is a link to the ranch:
